Jarrod Mullen signs until the end of 2011

Five-Eighth, Jarrod Mullen, who is already committed to the Knights until the end of the 2009 season has thrown his support behind the club's future direction, further extending the deal for another two years.

Mullen's decision is a major boost for Newcastle as it continues to build a Premiership force around an already impressive list of Internationals and local juniors.

"I'm enjoying Brian Smith's coaching," Mullen said.

"He's a real educator of the game and I think he's the right person to develop the young players we've signed long term."

The news follows a mixed season for the 20 year-old who suffered a season ending shoulder injury just weeks after making his Origin debut for New South Wales.

"I'm excited about our potential for next season. We have an incredible core of experienced players including Danny Buderus, Steve Simpson and Kurt Gidley and I believe the road ahead is positive," he said.

"I'm honoured to be part of the club's new direction."

Speaking about Mullen's extended retention; Knights Coach Brian Smith said his commitment displays maturity beyond his years.

"Jarrod is much more than an elite athlete, he has leadership qualities almost unheard of for a bloke his age," Smith said.

"It's great when a young player who's made early achievements in his career is willing to back the organisation that has provided the opportunities for him to do well.

"Along with the core people, a lot of youngsters the same age such as McManus, Paterson and Walsh are all good mates.

"We've got not only the promise of a strong team in the short term but a great team for the future.

"It's a real boost knowing a player like Jarrod who made a huge step this season in State of Origin and then had disappointment with injury can get his head around where the club is going longer term.

"It certainly shows insightfulness in a young bloke."

Mullen will resume training next week with a rehabilitation program in preparation for season 2008.

Injured Knights Five-Eighth, Jarrod Mullen will undergo reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder and will spend the remainder of the 2007 season on the sideline.

Mullen saw leading specialist, Dr Bokor in Sydney this morning, revealing sufficient damage to require surgery.

"I've weighed up the advice and surgery seems to be the sensible option to give me a head start for next season," Mullen said.

"Having the operation now means I can be back in full training by Christmas.

"Naturally I'm disappointed but my career is just beginning and I need to think about the future."

Newcastle coach Brian Smith said, "It's devastating news for him, he's been on a high since the start of the season, particularly with rep selection and the possibility of playing what was likely to be the last year of Andrew Johns' career.

"At the beginning of the season he had a lot to look forward to but since Origin it's been very difficult with small injuries and now a huge one.

"He's a smart kid; he knows he's not the only one ever to get injured in footy and certainly not the only one with a shoulder injury.

"Aku Uate has the same injury and now it looks like they might be having surgery at the same time."

Meanwhile, there has been a change to tomorrow's Newcastle Knights travel itinerary.

The team will now be departing EnergyAustralia Stadium at 7:45am for Newcastle Airport.
