T V Times apologises for 'Bad Boy' Terry Newton Photo Caption
Sat May 17, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill

Bradford Bulls have won an apology and a published retraction from the publishers of T V Times in relation to a photo-caption featuring Terry Newton that appeared in the 3-9 May 2008 issue of the nationally circulating magazine, ahead of the Millennium Magic weekend in Cardiff.

The Bulls had complained about a photo-caption in which Mr Newton was depicted wearing his Bulls' playing shirt alongside a caption which stated that he had been banned for failing a drugs test.

Bradford Bulls operates a zero tolerance policy towards the use of banned substances and, with players including Mr Newton as effective role models, works hard in the community and with the Police to promote healthy, law-abiding lifestyles among young people generally and school children in particular. By publishing a full colour photograph of the player in his Bulls playing shirt alongside the wrong and misleading caption the Bulls' heard-earned reputation for anti-drugs work in the community was potentially damaged.

The full text of TV Times' apology is as follows:-

"In our 3-9 May issue we published a Look out for ? piece about Bradford Bulls Rugby League player Terry Newton. This contained an inaccurate statement to the effect that he had been banned from playing for 20 months having failed a drugs test. We wish to make it clear that this was published in error and is completely untrue. We apologise to Mr Newton and to the Bradford Bulls Rugby League club."

Bradford Bulls have accepted the apology and retraction in satisfaction of the Club's complaint but continue to support the player in his separate claim for libel.

Newton back from 12-week suspension
Mon April 17, 2006
Source: www.bradfordbulls.co.uk

It's been a long wait, but after a twelve-week suspension, Terry Newton returns to the squad to face the Giants, Easter Tuesday and will be looking to make his first appearance in Bradford Bulls colours.

Newton said, "It's a new start for me. I just want to make a good impression here at Bradford. Brian Noble and the rest of the coaching staff have shown a lot of support and worked very hard with me in these last ten weeks."

Sitting on the sidelines for the season so far has not meant Newton has had time to take it easy. A long pre-season has meant Terry is feeling fitter than ever and comes into Tuesday's game ready to impress.

"I cannot thank Martin Clawson enough, he's worked really hard with me and I am feeling the best I have ever felt in my rugby league career. I just hope I can take this fitness onto the field with me, stay injury-free and do a good job for Bradford Bulls."

With tough lessons learned from his disciplinary, he is confident his come back will not mean a change to this element of his game.

It's been my style of play since I was a kid, and I'm not going to change my style of play just because I have had a lengthy ban. I'm still going to play hard, but stay within the rules."

Newton will add a new dimension to the pack, and his versatility to play at Hooker, Second-Row or Loose Forward will give the team a great boost. With Ian Henderson firmly in his preferred position at Hooker, Newton knows he has to perform well to gain his place in the side.

"Ian is a great player and I have utmost respect for him. But hopefully there will be room for both of us in the squad, I am sure they will be. Brian is not going to just drop Henderson because I am here. I can hopefully add something to the back-row as well."

The full Terry Newton interview can be found in Easter Tuesday's Gameday Magazine available throughout the ground at just £2.50

Don't miss Bradford Bulls versus Huddersfield Giants this Tuesday 18th April, kick off 8:00pm.
