Former Great Britain star Terry O'Connor has been appointed Sporting Director of Widnes Vikings.

The former Salford, Wigan and Widnes prop forward - a popular figure with Vikings' supporters -will bring invaluable knowledge and experience of rugby matters to Chairman Steve O'Connor's backroom team when he joins on January 2, 2008.

Terry will be responsible for a wide range of administration duties including player recruitment, player welfare and setting up community initiatives through schools and youth groups. He will also be assisting on Vikings' Super League Licence application in the New Year.

Widnes-born O'Connor, aged 36, who has supported his home-town club since he was first brought along to games as a three-year-old, will be combining his new role alongside his media work with Sky Sports.

Terry O'Connor said: "There's obviously a tremendous amount of work to be done to transform the fortunes of Vikings and I'm thrilled at being given the chance to help. Since Steve O'Connor took over, people within rugby league are all talking about the professionalism he has brought to Widnes. There's a genuine excitement in the town that big things are going to happen and I'm delighted to be able to be a part of it.

"I'm really looking forward to working with my great friend Steve McCormack. I'm hoping I will be able to take a lot of pressure off Steve's shoulders by looking after all the off-field activities involving the players, their welfare and offering practical support to them, leaving Steve free to concentrate all his energies on the playing side and developing a successful team."

O'Connor, who retired as a player a year ago, has been a champion of players' welfare issues and believes if clubs can provide a structured support service to players off the field, they will reap the benefits on the field.

Steve O'Connor said: "At the outset I made it clear we would transform this club by introducing experienced business professionals to work alongside talented and successful people from the world of rugby league. Terry O'Connor is ideally placed to help us achieve our goals of securing the long-term future of this club and mounting a successful campaign to win one of the coveted Super League licences."
