Patrick signs long-term Giants deal
Thu April 5, 2012

Huddersfield Giants star Larne Patrick has signed a new deal that commits him to the claret and gold until the end of the 2016 season.

The 23 year old strong running forward has made 68 appearances for the Giants scoring 16 tries and Managing Director Richard Thewlis is delighted to see the England Knight commit to the claret and gold:

"The retention long term of a current England Knights squad member is a wonderful boost for everyone at the club as we head into the important Easter period. Without a doubt Larne is one of the most explosive and exciting players in the competition. We believe that he has every opportunity here of progressing further and becoming a full International if he continues to develop as he has since joining us. He joins a growing number of home grown players who have debuted for the Giants in recent years and gone on to secure long term stability in their careers at our club as we continue to invest in young English talent giving them the opportunity to flourish."

Larne Patrick was thrilled to secure his long term future:

"I'm delighted to have signed a new deal with the Huddersfield Giants and I can now just purely focus on the rugby and enjoy my time here. I'm really looking forward to the next five years playing with the Giants.

"It's important to keep the stability in the squad and we've got so many promising youngsters who are signed on long-term deals. The club is going forward and we want to be winning things and the focus is on achieving that.

"I'm definitely confident we can keep this form up towards the end of the year. For the last couple of years now, we've seen what we're actually capable of doing; it's just a matter of playing well when it comes to the big games. We've had the experience of losing out, being so close and I think that will stand us in good stead. The focus for this year is to send Nathan Brown out with us achieving some silverware.

"Into next season, I'm looking forward to working with Paul Anderson as Head Coach. He's been working under Nathan Brown now for a few years, but he'll have his own ideas and the players believe in him and I think he'll do a great job."

Huddersfield Head Coach Nathan Brown insists that the claret and gold can travel to the DW Stadium for Saturday's clash with the reigning Engage Super League champions full of confidence as the 'Big One 3' edges ever nearer.

"We ended up getting the right result last week (against Catalan) based on some good footy that we played for periods in that game. There were some areas where we would have liked to have done a little better against the opposition but the main thing is that we got the result against a very good side.

"They have got some things they do consistently well, both from an attacking and defensive point of view. All the players within their squad seem to know the systems and know their roles within them very well, not only that but they do it consistently. To break them down takes a bit of work but we feel like we can get there with a bit of confidence.

"If we prepare well, work hard for each other and play well on the day then we generally give ourselves a reasonable shot at getting a result. The table probably suggests at the minute that the top four teams are probably a little bit more consistent than the others."

With a healthy following of Giants supporters to make the journey, an expected 20,000 plus crowd will be anticipating a high intensity clash. In the corresponding fixture last year, two Leroy Cudjoe tries and a Luke Robinson score sealed a famous win at the DW Stadium, whilst the Warriors underlined their credentials at the Galpharm Stadium in Round 6 with a 20-6 victory.

Brown knows only too well that the stage is set for a game befitting of the 'Big One 3' tagline;

"Wigan have got one or two different players from last year but the stuff they are doing is very similar, we know what's coming and I'm sure they could be saying the same thing about us. The recent history between both clubs show that results have varied, even in victories for one side against the other I don't think there has been too much in the score. The players from both sides will always be up for this type of fixture, we are placed in the top four and Wigan are the current champions so I'm sure both sides would be confident of doing very well. We managed to get a win in the same fixture last year, which probably only really confirms our belief.

"We weren't a long way away in the game earlier this season but I'd say they were definitely a touch better on the evening, it was 14-6 with two or three minutes to go and we'd had a couple of chances where they defended really well. There were some things we would have liked to have done better on that evening and they deserved the win but I think both sides showed that night that there isn't a great deal between us."

Interview with Larne Patrick

Huddersfield Giants powerhouse Larne Patrick is set to make his 50th appearance for the club in this Saturdays Round 19 clash against Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium.

The game has been billed as the 'Big One 3' and with a large crowd expected, Patrick is anticipating an exciting encounter;

"I can't wait for this week! It's my 50th game and I feel fortunate to have got to that point for the club, to have it in such a big game in front of a big crowd would be great. I'm sure plenty of our supporters will travel to the game and make themselves heard amongst what should be a really big home crowd. It will be a massive battle and I'm sure a great contest.

"Last week was really physical against Catalan and I'm sure this week will be exactly the same. It's the kind of contest that every front-rower relishes, at times I'm sure they will be on top of us but we will be aiming to get on top of them more often than not."

The Warriors are in fine form of late, repeating their 2010 Grand Final victory over St Helens in last week's derby clash at the Stobart Stadium; Patrick is well aware that the Giants will have to be on top form.

"Wigan are strong all over the park, every player has a role within their team and has the ability to turn up with a special piece of individual play. We are fully of aware of that and we have got to be on our game, turn up in the right frame of mind and hopefully play well ourselves.

"We know what we can do as a team and we are well aware what they are capable of; it's a case of putting it together this week in training and turning up on the day ready to produce a big performance."

Patrick has formed a formidable partnership of late with fellow front rowers Keith Mason, Eorl Crabtree and Darrell Griffin, who have carried the Giants forward from the engine room. The England Knights squad member is hoping to carry on in the same vain for the remainder of the year;

"I'm loving it at the moment! The four of us seem to be producing some decent football. I've mainly been teaming up with either Keith (Mason) or Darrell (Griffin) and coming on for Eorl after a spell, they are all individually great players and really add something to our pack as a whole, which is really strong.

"I really want to keep my spot and play as consistently as possible; we have players sitting on the sidelines who are more than capable and guys like Luke O'Donnell who are due back. The emphasis is on me to play as well as I can every week and secure my place for the rest of the year."
