Luke Patten Interview Audio - Disappointed with Mason
Tue November 20, 2007
by Matthew O'Neill
Bulldogs fullback Luke Patten was interviewed today by several media outlets with snippets of what he has said being aired on television or in print.

Thanks to website www.bulldogs.com.au the full interview by Patten is available to online readers.

Patten who has won successive Bulldogs Player of the Year awards was disappointed in new Roosters recruit Willie Mason's comments about long-serving clubman and coach Steve Folkes on the weekend.

The 27-year-old fullback with 226 NRL games behind him said, "It's not really my style to go bagging him in the media if I've got anything left to say to him I'll probably say it to his face.

"I was disappointed with him coming out and bagging Folkesy, I thought it was a little bit unwarranted.

"I can speak for us as a team and I know that we're all behind Folkesy and as I said we just want to move forward - he's got our full support."

Patten went on to mention minor details about Mason's off-field record and went on to say,

"Willie, as 'Folkesy' sort of said, 'after he stepped over that sideline he probably got a little bit sloppy with some of his sponsors obligations and other things'.

"If you get sloppy off the field that can sort of lead to being sloppy on the field so I thought that was one of our problems last year.

"There's doubt we're going to miss him, he's a NSW and Australian representative, but there's opportunity for young blokes to step up now and there's always someone ready to step up.

"It's an exciting time for the Bulldogs I think and it's an exciting time for our fans as well to show their support for us and maybe get on board at a time when people are saying that we're down and out."

Patten and captain Andrew Ryan are both expected to sign extended deals with the Bulldogs as the club looks to front-end a few contracts to be able to have more funds in the salary cap when the retention, recruitment and upgrading of player contracts comes around.

Meanwhile, Mason who signed a lucrative three-year deal with the Roosters last week wasn't at Roosters training yesterday and won't be at his first session until early next week.

For the second year in a row Bulldogs fullback Luke Patten has been named as the Bulldogs Player of the Year. In accepting the award Patten said, "I'm honoured to win this again. It means a lot as the voting is determined by your team mates who are the best judges as to whether you are putting in or not on the field."

Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes commented, "Luke's professionalism is second to none and all the hard work and commitment he puts into his training pays off for him every game."

Bulldogs centre Daryl Millard was named as the Rookie of the Year. In his first year at the club he played in 25 NRL games and finished second on the Bulldogs try scorers list with 13 tries.

Folkes said, "Daryl had a good first up year and I know in 2008 he will only get better."

Premier League Player of the Year also went to a previous winner in Adam Brideson. He captained the side, taking it to the Minor Premiership and the Grand Final qualifier.

Jersey Flegg Player of the Year was picked up by Heka Nanai. The winger was strong in both defence and attack and has been rewarded for his efforts by being picked in the Junior Kangaroos side to tour Fiji.

Clubman of the Year was awarded to Corey Hughes who has played 240 club games for the Bulldogs over 11 years. He was a member of the Bulldog 2004 NRL Premiership-winning team.

Willie Tonga picked up The Peter Warren Medal for service to the community. Over the past 12 months Willie has been involved in many community initiatives including a drug and alcohol awareness program that was introduced into several schools throughout Queensland; the Coonamble High School Sportsmentor program; Bankstown Youth Week Festivities; a National Aboriginal Sports Corporation coaching clinic; the NRL Players' Charity Christmas party; and Kick4Kids program.

Tonga is a huge role model in his home town of Cherbourg in South East QLD, which he visits regularly and speaks to the local youth about future planning, goal setting and self-discipline. He regularly sends football boots (his own and those of other Bulldogs players) and training clothing to Cherbourg Community Health as rewards for kids who meet their goals and to disadvantaged children to help build their self-esteem and show them they are being thought of.

Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad commented, "Willie is a quiet bloke who doesn't search for accolades for the work he does in the community. He just sees an opportunity to help someone out and takes it."

The Bulldogs.com.au Player of the Year Award, voted on by the registered visitors to the Bulldogs website, went to second rower Sonny Bill Williams, who finished the year as the Bulldogs leading try scorer. Votes were tallied after each game of the NRL season.
