Salford desperate to get back to winning ways
Sat April 21, 2012
Salford City Reds coach Phil Veivers says his team are "desperate" to get back to winning ways against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium tomorrow.

The Reds were fifth in Stobart Super League, having put together a three-match winning run, but they have slipped out of the top eight after winning just one of their last six games.

The Carnegie Challenge Cup arguably represents Salford's best chance of silverware this year but Veivers is adamant that his players will not have one eye on next week's fifth-round tie with Leeds Rhinos.

"The most important game of the season is on Saturday," he said. "We've spoken about that. It's all about Wakefield.

"It's going to be another tough game. We're desperate for a win. They've lost their last three, we've lost our last three so we're probably on a par.

"Both want to play some football and both need to improve their defensive efforts."

Wakefield, who conceded the double to the Reds in 2011, have won just once since their opening-day victory at Widnes Vikings and have only the league left to play for following their Cup exit at Leeds last Friday.

Former Hull KR forward Frankie Mariano comes in for the injured Lucas Walshaw in the only change for the Wildcats, with captain Steve Southern and ex-Leeds second rower Ali Lauitiiti still on the sidelines.

Veivers recalls all four senior players he rested for their Cup win at Whitehaven, including full-back Luke Patten, who this week announced his decision to retire at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old Australian had another year left on his contract but says he did not think he was physically up for it, much to the disappointment of Veivers.

"Credit to him for coming to us early," said Veivers. "We can now look at our options.

"He feels his body can't recover quickly enough after games and there's only one person who can tell you that."

The former Canterbury Bulldogs favourite had a quiet first season in Super League but has caught the eye this year in an attack re-structured by assistant coach Sean Long and is currently the club's leading tryscorer.

"We changed our play a bit this year," said Veivers. "We structured our attack differently and Luke plays a massive part in that.

"Overall he creates things for our outside backs and he's scored some tries. He's been going alright with the ball in hand."

Stand-off Daniel Holdsworth and forwards Stephen Wild and Shannon McPherson also return, along with winger Jodie Broughton, which leaves only second rower Vinnie Anderson on the injury list.

"It makes selection complicated but it's a nice headache to have," said Veivers.

Patten to retire at seasons end
Wed April 18, 2012
by rleague
Salford City Reds fullback Luke Patten has confirmed he will retire at the end of the Super League season following 15 seasons in the top grade.

Patten, who has enjoyed a great season at Salford City Stadium so far this year made the announcement to his team-mates this afternoon and will call time on illustrious career in both the NRL and Super League.

The 32-year-old's career spans over 300 top flight games in Australia and England including 225 for Canterbury-Bankstown as well as over 100 tries.

Patten told reds.co.uk: "My body has made this decision for me. I'm a player who has always got confidence from training really hard but these days it takes me all week to recover from a game so I can't do that as well I want to.

"The team has played better this year in patches and I have enjoyed that but I'm still not at where I want myself to be. I want to go out after a strong season. I guess I don't want to embarrass myself as the guy who had one season too many.

"I'm comfortable with the decision and want to go out playing really well and help the Reds make the Top 8 and look at beating Leeds in the next round of the Challenge Cup."

As for life after football including speculation about becoming a referee, Patten added: "I have no concrete plans to be honest. After today people will know I'm available and we'll see what happens.

"I think refereeing is out of the question now because of the training but I certainly want to stay involved in the game."

Patten made his debut for the Illawarra Steelers in 1998 and was fullback for St George Illawarra in the 1999 NRL Grand Final. Unwanted by the Dragons in 2000, he moved across to Canterbury where he enjoyed 10 seasons at the Bulldogs playing an impressive 225 first grade games including being a member of the 2004 premiership success. He played for Canterbury in the 2005 World Club Challenge against Leeds and represented Country Origin in three matches in 2002, 2004 and 2009. He never quite made NSW State of Origin selection, but was 18th man and on standby for the final match of the 2009 series.

Since going across to England Patten has played 40 Super League and Challenge Cup matches including taking part in both matches over the Easter long weekend. He missed Salford's 58-18 victory against Whitehaven last weekend.

Patten, born on the 9th January, 1980, is belived to be the first player born in the 1980's decade to appear in the NRL or Super League competitions.
