Former Bradford skipper Jamie Peacock's soft spot for his old club has been heightened by their current plight, but he will not be worrying about them come kick-off in the Good Friday derby.

The Leeds Rhinos prop is putting up for auction tomorrow night his treasured ring and shirt from the Bulls' 2003 Grand Final victory over Wigan Warriors in aid of Bradford's desperate appeal to raise £1million to save the club from going out of business.

The Bulls say they need £500,000 by 5pm on Friday to stave off the threat of a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs and to pay the players' wages this month, and Peacock is hoping his gesture will go some way towards helping them reach their target.

"The club means a lot to me," he said.

"I had nine or 10 years here and I wanted to show my support for the club.

"I could never have imagined this situation. I was flabbergasted really. You wonder where this has come from."

However, Peacock's loyalty will remain firmly with hometown team Leeds once the action gets under way in front of what is expected to be a 20,000-plus crowd at Odsal.

"I do look forward to playing here," said the England captain at a joint press conference at Odsal, where he played in front of Bradford's Super League record crowd of 24,020 for the Leeds derby in 1999.

"It's three years since I played here due to injury and it's always extra special playing against your old club.

"It's an amazing place to play. I've seen the photo of 100,000 people crammed in here.

"You need 14,000 or 15,000 to get an atmosphere and, when you get above 20,000, it's electric. Hopefully that's going to be the case on Friday night.

"You can't help thinking about what could happen to the club but come Friday I'll be just going out there to win for Leeds, plain and simple.

"We've lost the last two and we have to make sure we stay in the pack at the top of the league. I won't be interested in Bradford's plight when I'm playing."

Bradford reckon a crowd above 20,000 would generate an extra £40,000 above budget to take them closer to their target.

England captain Jamie Peacock has defended his Leeds Rhinos team-mates in the wake of some apparent criticism of their decision to dye their hair for charity.

The five-time Stobart Super League champions sported red and pink haircuts at St Helens last night, having agreed to do so in aid of Sport Relief if a certain amount of money was raised prior to kick-off.

They were left red-faced on the pitch, though, with a resurgent Saints side running in eight tries in a 46-6 win.

That led to Leeds being branded as "unprofessional" during a television commentary, prompting coach Brian McDermott to respond by telling former Great Britain hooker Mike Stephenson that he was "bang out of order".

Peacock has also had his say, issuing an address on his Twitter page and then on his club's official website.

"To anyone who thinks we lost because we had red or pink hair; you are clueless," he said.

"Our hair colour had nothing to do with this game and anyone who says that obviously doesn't know how this team works.

"We are trying to raise awareness and funds for a great cause.

"At the end of the day, this was a disappointing loss but we will come back ready to go again next Friday.

"There are people who have horrendous lives around the world and by having a small bit of embarrassment personally, we can raise funds that might save someone's life.

"If I was asked to do it again, for that reason I would do, 100%."
