"Origin Players" and why Queensland always wins
Wed May 23, 2012
by Gee Gunaidi
On the day of the 1st Origin just remember, enjoy the game, because no matter what happens in Melbourne, Queensland will win the series.

I will cue the 3 standard reasons which receive more airplay than Pitbull:

Reason 1: - Queensland has more passion!

Considering that Queensland got Inglis to move from Kempsey and travel half way up Australia to become a Queenslander, as well as getting Adrian Lam to move from PNG, and Karmichael Hunt to renounce his Kiwiness to play for them - this argument may well seem to be valid.

The reality is that maybe when Origin first started 25-30 years ago, Queensland players may have been more passionate, but not anymore. We have had the ridiculousness of Braith Anasta, Robbie Farah, Michael Ennis and other players adjusting their games, week to week to play a more 'origin' style of game, so they can appease the NSW selectors, because they care so much.

The only Queenslanders that still have more passion - are the fans, who definitely care far more than NSW. Comparing the fans of Queensland v NSW, is like comparing a stadium full of crazy Liverpool fans vs a Lords Cricket Test and their polite claps. That's how much more - most Queensland fans care.

Reason 2: - They have better players!

Well lately they have had some key players who are brilliant - Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston, but overall NSW can definitely match them for talent. Jarryd Hayne, Todd Carney, Aku Uate, Paul Gallen, Brett Stewart and Farah are comparable in talent to their Queensland opposition, the difference is most of Queensland's best players, actually get picked. So it appears as though they have the best players but they don't, they just pick them. Gee, I wonder if picking your best players makes a difference in winning or losing.

Here's a rule that the head honchos in charge of NSW should remember: You can't complain if the other team has the better players if you don't even pick your best players! It's like the schoolyard footy match - and you pick all the biggest, slowest players, and the other team picks the faster, more athletic and more skilful players and then have a whinge after the game that the other team had better players. You had a chance to pick some of the best players!

NSW players have been just as good as Queensland's players, they just don't get picked.

Reason 3: They stay loyal and don't make changes!

Not true, it appears as though they are more loyal - they usually stay more loyal BUT that's because they usually pick their best players in their positions and most of their players are in form during the week to week NRL competition.

In recent times, there was a period when Queensland was picking every next big thing and players not necessarily in form (early 2000s). Resulted in losses and some poor performances, however, since they started picking most of their players from those in good week to week form and generally their best players, this has coincided with their domination. Not a secret, usually the best players, playing almost at their best every week will generally perform better in State of Origin as well. Sometimes it is that simple.

NSW though is just as loyal, especially to particular players (hello Mr Gidley!) but for the most part they are the wrong players. This is what has cost them. They are loyal to their favourites who are of course 'Origin Players'.

In reality, NSW has as much passion, are as loyal to a group of players, and their players are just as good, but they still lose nearly all the time. So why does Queensland always win?

Because NSW does not pick its best players and plays favourites with selections, usually disregarding week to week form in the NRL - a reasonably simple reason - and the only reason!

This season is a perfect example - somehow from the start of the season - Kurt Gidley, Danny Buderus and Mitchell Pearce were considered automatic selections - how?

Let's take a slightly closer look than the NSW selectors do (I knew watching Poirot on the ABC would help my investigative skills):

Kurt Gidley - Gidley has played in 12 Origin matches, and been on the losing side 9 times. We also had the laughable situation where he was named captain of NSW, but wasn't good enough to start the match. Gidley is a goer, I actually like him as a player, he gives everything but he is definitely NOT in the best 17 players that are eligible for NSW. He isn't in the top 3 fullbacks or in the top 6 halves in the state, so how exactly is he a guaranteed selection? Yet no matter what, he gets picked and it doesn't seem to matter that he has played in 9 losing games. Gidley should be a replacement in the case of numerous injuries, not the first player picked.

Danny Buderus - Let's focus to the future like Queensland - I could swear I heard that last season from the NSW camp. So unless Buderus has been taking pills for the fountain of youth advertised on the Internet, 2012 has the ridiculous situation of a 34-year-old Buderus, somehow jumping ahead of everyone for the hooker position, despite being in just decent form for a struggling Newcastle side (we won't mention the City v Country fixture). How did he earn this distinction exactly? Has he been leading Newcastle up the table and I have somehow missed it? Has he been in fantastic form almost every week and clearly won the position? Is he in better form than Farah, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Matthew Srama or Ennis? Not really. So why was he a guaranteed selection?

Buderus was also the captain for NSW in the 2006-2008 series' - NSW lost all 3 series, and at the time, especially in 2007 and 2008 it could be strongly argued that Farah was by far the more deserving selection on a week to week performance level. Buderus is now 34, and the fact he is even playing week to week first grade is remarkable, but his time has come and gone and his form has not been good enough to be an automatic selection. His immediate move to the front of the queue shows that there are problems with the selection process.

Mitchell Pearce - As for Origin discussion in 2012 - anyone ever notice how only the 5/8 position seemed to be the only position up for selection? It seems as though Mitchell Pearce is a guaranteed starter no matter what. Why? For the readers, yes all 2 of you (myself and my best mate), how is it that Wallace, Soward, Carney and Maloney are not ahead of Mitchell Pearce in the selection race?

Pearce has played in the last 6 Origin matches, has barely made an impact and has a record of 1 win and 5 losses. He is the key playmaker for NSW so why isn't that record taken into account when the halfback is being selected?

If you are a gambler, would you bet on a coin landing on heads every single time? No, but Pearce is heads for the NSW selectors. They are going to keep picking him until he finally has a good game to vindicate their selection.

Pearce, should be no where near the NSW Origin team, there are at the very least, 4 players better than him at this stage. Not to mention that for most of his time in 1st grade, the Roosters have struggled with Pearce as their key playmaker and that his winning record was terrible until Todd Carney came along. How exactly does his week to week record in the NRL provide him untouchable status as NSW's premier halfback, not to mention his record so far in Origin?

Jamie Soward is the player it seems who has been made the scapegoat for last year's performance, rather than Pearce. Despite this, Soward is the key playmaker for a St George Illawarra team which has been amongst the best since 2009. Why doesn't this count for anything? Oops, silly me I forgot, Soward is not an 'Origin Player'.

I will compare the 5 players and their winning % in the NRL:

Mitchell Pearce - 118 FG games - 43% win record
James Maloney - 65 FG games - 57% win record
Peter Wallace - 120 FG games - 60% win record
Todd Carney - 125 FG games - 46% win record
Jamie Soward - 138 FG games - 57% win record

Maloney, Wallace, Soward have played for winning teams for the last 3 or more seasons and have good winning percentages as the key playmakers for their teams. Carney is back to his best and is amongst the most talented players in the whole competition. Maloney couldn't even make the City v Country game. Pearce has the worst winning % out of the 5 halves, so why is he indispensable again? Silly me, he must be an 'Origin Player'.

Seems like winning week to week and being the key playmaker counts for zero in the NSW selection game.

Some other recent examples of ridiculousness from NSW:

Hayne on the Wing: - Remember Ricky Stuart argued he doesn't see as anything other than a 5/8 last year, picked at 5/8 for City and the he gets selected for NSW on the ... wing!

Hayne is a magical player, but if his form wasn't good enough to be selected at fullback, where he can utilise all his talent, then too bad, go back and earn it for Parramatta week to week and then force your way into the fullback position.

Selection of Michael Jennings: - dropped for poor attitude, commitment and form at Penrith and that results in an ... Origin Jersey - take that Phil Gould! Now who has been proven right, Jennings or Penrith?

Jamal Idris in 2011 - Somehow Idris got picked last year - he was still all potential, ask any Bulldog fan and they would tell you, he was generally off the pace, read the play wrong, and didn't show too much commitment, but hey big Jamal, here's an Origin Jersey, you are an 'Origin Player'.

Timana Tahu in 2010 - week to week form for Parramatta was very ordinary with probably the odd decent game, yet somehow vaulted straight back into the Origin team on the wing, a position he hadn't played in years. He then walked out of the NSW camp.

We won't mention the Eric Grothe debacle and the continued selection of Matt King on the wing which cost NSW two series and a number of other ridiculous selections. I really could go on and on.

As the numerous examples above show, the NSW team doesn't always earn their NSW jersey or position with week to week performances of high quality - a lot of the times it doesn't matter at all. What is the incentive to improve and get picked? Seems like you are either an 'Origin Player' or you are not.

NSW essentially writes off half their talent pool with the term not an 'Origin Player'. I mean what the hell is an 'Origin Player' anyway? Considering I have seen this need to play an 'Origin' style of game create havoc with the week to week performances of Ennis, Farah and Anasta, who attempted to adjust their games to a more 'origin style' (despite being brilliant before adjusting things), I don't think I want to know.

I will call it for what I think it is: - it's a catch all phrase used to justify why players that the selectors don't like for whatever reason, despite form, skill and ability are labelled with, to justify the selection of their favourites.

The whole NSW selection process and favouritism is what is holding NSW back, not passion, not talent and not loyalty. You are either an 'Origin Player' in their minds or you're not, doesn't matter what you do week to week.

Queensland to win in 3!

Pearce: Happy but plenty to do
Mon February 13, 2012
Source: www.sydneyroosters.com.au

It was only a trial but the signs were good yesterday afternoon at Belmore.

Despite the constant chopping and changing of the team every player that took the field seemed to slide in effortlessly without interrupting the rhythm of the Tricolours efforts.

Halfback Mitch Pearce was happy with his side's effort but stood short of being content.

"The biggest sign to me was how easy the transition was in getting back on the field," he said.

"Normally you feel a bit lost when you are on the field for the first time but yesterday we all mentioned how comfortable we felt no matter who was on the field."

"It is a credit to the coaches work in the pre season so far but it's important to realise we have plenty of improvement to go."

The 22 year old played the second half of the trial and could already see
some of the work on the training field transferring to the playing field.

"In the past you could say we have been guilty of not going so well in the arm wrestle," he said.

"We have made a concentrated effort to make sure we work hard at winning the forward battle and all the little things that make all the difference."

"Yesterday I felt we slowly ground down the opposition and hopefully we can continue to work on that."

A massive pool of players took part in Sunday's trial including a number of youngsters who took the field for both the NYC and NRL sides.

A pleasant selection headache looks set to await coach Brian Smith come round one as it was difficult to find a below par performance.

"Frank Paul I thought was excellent for us yesterday, as was Tinirau Arona," said Pearce.

"T (Arona) has been impressive all pre-season."

On a personal level Pearce was solid in his first hit out for the year and is confident with a few more minutes under his belt, he will be ready to fire against the Rabbitohs.

The Tricolours next trial is against the Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium this Saturday Night at 730pm.
