Peek hungry for more after play-off birth
Wed September 8, 2010
Source: www.crusadersrfl.com

Veteran prop Adam Peek believes Crusaders can shock the world once again with victory over Huddersfield Giants in this weekend's Super League play-offs.

Brian Noble's men travel to the Galpharm Stadium this Saturday (kick-off 3.45pm) after securing the eighth and final play-off spot during a dramatic night at the Racecourse.

Crusaders headed into their final game with Hull KR needing to better Castleford's result against St Helens, with both game kicking off at the same time. Tries from Ryan O'Hara, Rhys Hanbury, Jarrod Sammut, Tony Martin and a last-gasp Luke Dyer secured a enthralling 30-24 win.

And there were a tense few minutes after the final whistle as players and fans waited anxiously for news from Knowlsey Road, where Welsh hero Keiron Cunningham last ditch try secured a 40-30 victory for the hosts.

Crusaders almost miraculous run to the play-offs has created a real buzz around the town. And Australian Peek, 34, insists there is still more to come from the Welsh side.

"Everyone was really happy after the final whistle," Peek said.

"Everyone was pumped, we had the music blaring and a few of the guys were dancing in the dressing room at the end of the game. We have come a long way from last year, even a long way from the start of the season. We're through to the finals and we're absolutely over-the-moon about it.

"I'd be lying if I thought we would have made the top 8 at the start of the season. Everyone had a really positive attitude at the start of the season; we expected to be more competitive with Nobby coming in. As the season wore on, our confidence grew and we knew we had the ability to reach the top 8. I think a few people will be eating their words now.

"It is going to be tough against Huddersfield, they are a big side and they're right up there with the top four teams in Super League. All the boys are excited to get back into training this week, settle down a bit and just enjoy the week. It's great making the top 8 but we're not content with just doing that. We want to make something of it and carry on. We've still got plenty in the tank.

Crusaders secured their first win over Hull KR during the Super League era at the Racecourse on Saturday. The game lived up to its billing as a brutal encounter, with huge hits flying in from both sides.

Peek added: "The most important thing was to win. Everytime we have played Hull KR previously, they have give us a bit of a rugby lesson but we had nothing to lose tonight and everything to play for. It's a tribute to all the hard work the boys and everyone involved with the club has put in this season.

"It was real physical at times. Hull KR really brought it and showed a lot of courage. They had four forwards on the bench so we knew what to expect. They are a good side and it was a really battle out there. Things went our way a little bit but we'll take the two points. We go into the play-offs with a lot of confidence.

"Brian was obviously happy with the effort. There are obviously things we still need to work on and improve before next week. But we're looking forward to the challenge week.

Crusaders will travel to Huddersfield full f confidence after victory over Hull KR, and he believes all the pressure will be on Nathan Brown's side due to their higher league finish.

"We have nothing to lose. There is no pressure on us ? the pressure will all be n Huddersfield because they're higher in the table and will have home advantage. We're just going to go there and play our game. It's now knockout football and anything can happen over 80 minutes."

Peek out to tame Rhinos
Wed June 16, 2010
Source: www.crusadersrfl.com

Leeds Rhinos will face a much improved Crusaders side than the one they met on the opening day of the season.

That's the view of Aussie Prop Adam Peek as Crusaders prepare to tackle the reigning Engage Super League champions at Headingly on Sunday (kick-off 3pm).

Brian Noble's side head to West Yorkshire full of confidence after last weekend's 40-22 dismantling of Bradford Bulls.

It was Wrexham outfit's fist win in four and has put them right back in the mix for a play-off birth.

But Crusaders face an entirely different kettle of fish on Sunday when they take on Leeds. The Rhinos have recovered from a difficult start to the season and are currently in scintillating form, having won their last seven games and are currently fifth in the Engage Super League table.

The two sides on the opening day of the season, where 10,000 plus fans braved arctic conditions to see the Crusaders push the Rhinos for an hour before eventually losing 6-34.

And Peek, 32, believes Crusaders are now better equipped to deal with the threat posed by Brian McClennan's men.

"There are no easy games in Super League, said Peek. "Leeds have come back and are now hitting a bit of form. A few of their guys played in the test against France last weekend and they will be keen to get them back. We've just got to make sure we show the same desire and commitment that we did against Bradford and make sure we take our opportunities. Leeds don't give you much so when we have a chance to score we have to take it.

"Last time we played Leeds we hung with them for 65 minutes, we've got to make sure we match them for the whole eighty on Sunday. We are a better team than the one that played opening day of the season, we know each other better and the combinations are coming together."

Head coach Brian Noble will be looking for more of the same from his Crusaders side following the convincing win over the Bulls. And former Cronulla Shark Peek says there is a great feeling in the camp following the morale boosting win on Sunday.

"It has been a few weeks since our last win. It was a big game for us on Sunday, obviously being at home there is that extra element of expectation on your shoulders. But it was a good performance and we're delighted that we got the win over Bradford." Peek added

"It gives us a lot of confidence. Things haven't gone our way in recent weeks so we have gone back to basics. Against Bradford we went through our sets, worked hard for each other and put in a big shift defensively. In recent weeks, our starts haven't been great, but in the first twenty minutes on Sunday we were ahead and I think that proved the difference.

"It's a funny game is rugby league. Last game against Harlequins we left too many gaps in defence but against Bradford we worked together and hopefully we can take that confidence into next week. Leeds are probably the most dangerous attacking team in the Super League, players like Danny Maguire and Brent Webb can create an opportunity out of nothing so we realise we will have to be really sharp defence wise."

"We just take it week by week. Obviously it's becoming a bit of a cliche but if we can just get a few back-to-back wins who knows? It would be nice to go to Leeds and beat them on their home turf but it is going to be a challenge, they're defending champions so we've got to make sure we go there and compete. Brian will be happy with that."

And Adam was also keen to praise his fellow teammates following the victory, which put Crusaders back up to tenth in the Engage Super League table.

"I thought our half-backs were magnificent. Obviously it is a big blow when the team missing Michael Witt and Jarrod (Sammut) but Rhys Hanbury and Peter Lupton really stepped up to the mark today. They did a really good job and considering they haven't played together on a regular basis, their combinations were outstanding. If Witty and Jarrod are going to be missing for a while, it is important that they play regularly and get the team going forward."

"Tony Martin is a very experienced player. He is very good in defence and he is a great organiser, he is always talking on the field. He is a great link between the outside backs and forwards and having him back gives the rest of the guys a huge boost. We've also got Lincoln Withers in the middle, he's only a little bloke but he keeps going for eighty minutes and takes us around the park."

Next up at the Racecourse Ground on Sunday 27th June are John Kear's Wakefield Trinity Wildcats (kick-off 3pm). The two sides met previously back in April, with Crusaders edging a hard fought game 10-20 at Bellevue and the Wildcats will be out for revenge. You can get tickets for the big match by ringing the ticket hotline on 01978 292129, visiting the club shop or online at www.crusadersrfl.com
