First-year Kiwi captain Roy Asotasi won the Chrisco Player of the Year accolade at the New Zealand Rugby League's annual awards dinner tonight.
Asotasi (25), one of only four players to appear in each of the Kiwis' six tests this year, was appearing in just his 17th international when he captained his country for the first time in the Anzac Test against Australia in Brisbane.
His predecessor Ruben Wiki had played in 37 tests before captaining the Kiwis in the last 18 of his world record 55 internationals.
Asotasi also co-captained South Sydney in his first season with the club after five years with the Bulldogs. Consistently one of the Kiwis' hardest-working forwards, he made a phenomenal 44 tackles in the 14-20 first test loss to Great Britain in Huddersfield on October 27.
He had to wait until his sixth test as captain and the last of the year to experience leading New Zealand to victory. In the 22-14 win against France in Paris he was on the field for all but nine minutes of the match. Asotasi has now played 22 tests.
He was one of three nominees for the premier award. Also in contention were Warriors utility Simon Mannering, another to play in every test this year, and rookie international fullback Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters).
Mannering (21), used in the centres in the Anzac Test, played in the back row in the next five internationals as he boosted his number of tests to 11.
Perrett (22), who appeared at wing, centre and fullback during the NRL season, was in the No 1 jersey for each of the Kiwis' four tests against Great Britain and France.
Perrett was one of an astonishing total of 13 test debutants during the year as a big injury toll and unavailability forced the national selectors to use 35 players in the six-test programme. It's unlikely New Zealand has fielded as many test players - and new internationals - in a year in its history (apart from the inaugural test against Wales in 1908).
Apart from Asotasi and Mannering, the other two players to appear in every test were hooker Dene Halatau (Wests Tigers) and prop Sam Rapira (Vodafone Warriors).
After his outstanding efforts, Perrett won the ISC Rookie of the Year award.
The full list of awards winners was:
Lion Foundation Junior Player of the Year: Ben Matulino (Wellington).
Southern Trust Referee of the Year: Leon Williamson (Auckland).
Bartercard Cup Coach of the Year: Brent Gemmell (Auckland Lions).
Bartercard Cup Player of the Year: Kelvin Wright (Auckland Lions).
Women's Player of the Year: Honey Hireme (Papakura).
Mad Butcher Personality of the Year: Steve Price (Vodafone Warriors).
ISC Rookie of the Year: Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters).
Chrisco Player of the Year Nominees: Roy Asotasi (South Sydney), Simon Mannering (Vodafone Warriors); Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters). Winner: Asotasi.

Sydney Roosters fullback Sam Perrett will make his test debut when the Kiwis face Great Britain in the first match of their three-test series at Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield on Saturday (October 27).
The 22-year-old replaces Parramatta's Krisnan Inu, who returned home with a shoulder injury after the Centenary Test in Wellington on October 14.
Last Saturday night Perrett was at fullback for the star-studded All Golds in their 25-18 win against the Northern Union in Warrington.
Perrett is the only fullback included in a 19-man squad named by Kiwi coach Gary Kemble today.
"We were pleased with his efforts for the All Golds in his first match at international level," said Kemble.
"He'll definitely be at fullback but we're not yet set on our final line-up. There are still some positions and combinations we're looking at before deciding on our line-up."Also included in the squad is Bradford winger Tame Tupou who was added to the touring party as a replacement player only yesterday.
Apart from Perrett and Tupou, five other players who turned out for the All Golds were included in the test squad - halfback Thomas Leuluai, hooker David Faiumu and back rowers Louis Anderson, Greg Eastwood and Epalahame Lauaki. A test debut also awaits Lauaki if he is named in the final 17 to play.
Leuluai and Anderson last played at test level in the 2006 Anzac Test while Warriors utility Lance Hohaia is in line for his first test since the 2005 Tri Nations.
"The All Golds match was really beneficial for a lot of our players," said Kemble.
"As we planned, every player in the touring squad has now had a run in the last two weeks, apart from Lance who was called in as a replacement after the test in Wellington."Not included in the squad are front rower Jeff Lima (Melbourne), halfback Jeremy Smith (South Sydney) and teenaged outside backs Shaun Kenny-Dowall (Sydney Roosters) and Chase Stanley (St George Illawarra). Kenny-Dowall and Stanley both played for the All Golds.
Not considered for selection for this test was replacement centre Clinton Toopi, who is returning to New Zealand with his family before flying back to the United Kingdom to link up with the team this weekend.
Meanwhile, original selection David Kidwell left the team today. He is flying home to Christchurch to see his mother who is seriously ill. He won't rejoin the Kiwis.
The Kiwi squad for the first test is:
Louis Anderson (Warriors)
Roy Asotasi (Captain) (South Sydney Rabbitohs)
Greg Eastwood (Brisbane Broncos)
David Faiumu (North Queensland Cowboys)
Dene Halatau (Wests Tigers)
Shontayne Hape (Bradford Bulls)
Lance Hohaia (Warriors))
Epalahame Lauaki (Warriors)
Thomas Leuluai (Wigan Warriors)
Simon Mannering (Warriors)
Fuifui Moimoi (Parramatta Eels)
Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters)
Frank Pritchard (Penrith Panthers)
Sam Rapira (Warriors)
Ben Roberts (Bulldogs)
Jeremy Smith (Melbourne Storm)
Taniela Tuiaki (Wests Tigers)
