Source: www.leedsrugby.comFormer Leeds Rhinos star Willie Poching is hoping to raise funds for a local children's cancer ward by canoeing from Liverpool to Leeds.
Poching, who is now an assistant coach at the Rhinos, is leading a team of staff from the club on a five day mission to canoe the length of the Liverpool to Leeds canal in aid of the Candlelighters charity to raise money for St James Hospital's Children's Oncology Ward in Leeds.
Each year the Rhinos first team players visit St James hospital to meet young fans and their families. The visits are truly inspirational for the players and they are always incredibly impressed by the tremendous courage of the children and their families. The atmosphere on the ward is upbeat, fun, friendly and always extremely welcoming.
After last years visit, the players, lead by Poching, decided they wanted to offer more help to staff, families and of course the children. In response, Willie set himself the challenge of raising awareness and some much needed money for the ward at St James Hospital.
Hence the Canoe for Cancer Challenge! The Challenge is to canoe from Liverpool to Leeds along the Liverpool to Leeds Canal ? a total distance of 127miles. Willie only has five days in which to complete this challenge, a minimum of 26 miles each day before finishing in Leeds in time for the Rhinos clash with Huddersfield Giants at Headingley Carnegie on Friday 11th July. Each night during the challenge, Willie will be attending fundraising events with members of the Leeds Rugby Foundation, the club's own charitable trust, along the route of their journey to raise funds and awareness for Candlelighters with donations for prizes having been offered by tradition rivals St Helens, Wigan and Bradford amongst others.
Commenting on the challenge Poching said, "I have been very fortunate in my life to play the game I love, perform in front of thousands of people at Headingley Carnegie and represent my country however that is nothing compared to the courage that everyone in the Children's Oncology Ward shows on a daily basis. We are looking forward to the challenge and hopefully raising as much money as possible along the way. I hope Rugby League fans across the area can come out and support us and give generously to this great cause."
Fans can donate online at
www.justgiving.com/williepoching or come along to any of the events during the week long challenge which starts on 7th July in Liverpool.
