Source: www.wiganwarriors.comFormer Wigan and Great Britain full-back Kris Radlinski has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours.
The 31-year-old Radlinski, whose one-club career was cruelly ended by injury last season, follows in a long line of Wigan legends, including Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards, Martin Offiah and, most recently, Andrew Farrell.
"It's very overwhelming," he said.
"I'm still in a bit of shock. It's a tremendous honour for myself and my family as well as for Wigan and the game in general, a massive honour.
"When you look at some of the people who have been honoured in the past, people like Faz, Martin Offiah, Ellery and Shaun Edwards, they are all big players in the history of the game.
"I don't know how these things work but somebody must have been impressed with my career."One of the all-time greats to wear the famous cherry and white shirt, Radlinski joined Wigan as a 17-year-old in 1993 and twice rejected big-money offers to switch codes.
A fearless last line of defence and magnificent under the high ball, Radlinski was famous for his uncanny ability to counter-attack and, with 183 tries from his 322 appearances, remains 13th in Wigan's all-time scoring list.
He hung up his boots in March of 2006 after eventually succumbing to a persistent knee injury but, with Wigan struggling to avoid relegation from Super League, he came back and helped them to 10 wins from their last 12 games.
"I had a tremendous career," he said.
"The 12 or 13 years I spent at Wigan was the happiest time of my life and I consider myself very lucky. This tops it all off.
"It's probably the ultimate achievement in the game and it's quite difficult to comprehend."Radlinski, who is currently recovering from knee surgery, finished the game with no regrets and, although he has no plans to go into coaching, he hopes to stay involved in the game in some capacity.
"When I came back, realised I was in no shape to play the game any more," he recalled.
"I had other injuries beside the knee and they were catching up on me. I also had a back injury.
"You get to know when it's time to call it a day. I listened to my body, which has got to see me through the rest of my life.
"I took some time out and had the knee operation. It's been more difficult than I thought. All I'm educated in is rugby league. There are not many corridors open and it's tough at the moment.
"I don't think coaching is for me. You have to be a certain kind of person to do that, you need a ruthless streak, which is not me. I'm a kind of laid-back character. I'm starting to look at other options."News source:

Source: www.wiganwarriors.comWigan Warriors can today confirm the decision of Kris Radlinski to retire from the game. As a result he will not be involved in the remaining games of the season.
Kris originally made his decision back in March to retire due to a knee injury but after a period of rest decided to return to the club to try and help the side move up the Super League table. It had always been Kris's intention to hang up his boots at the end of the year.
Radlinski made his return in the home game against Catalans Dragons in June and has made six appearances in total (five starts and one off the bench recently at Leeds.) Since returning the side have won eight of their last nine games.
Speaking about the decision Kris said,
"It has been fantastic to play for my home-town club again, but now it's time to call it a day once and for all and this time there will be no turning back. I am glad to have played my part with the club winning some games. The knee just won't stand up to the training and matches so I have decided to finish playing. I have every confidence in the lads and the team spirit is magnificent. There is a strong belief in the club from top to bottom and I am proud to have been involved again.
"I have many happy memories of my time at Wigan, and these last couple of months will certainly be a part of them. At times it has been like winning a trophy. I will continue to support the team from the sidelines and I wish them well in the remaining three games."Chairman Maurice Lindsay added,
"Kris has been an exceptional professional throughout his career at Wigan, and never more so than during the last couple of months when he unselfishly came out of retirement to help us without even being paid. He has been a great servant to this club and has shown true courage and character. His contribution has been immense. His timely defence in the game at Harlequins last month helped us win a very tight game, while he finished his career with a stunning win at Leeds, an achievement I feel sure he will remember for a very long time to come."News sent by:
