Source: www.cowboys.com.auBack rower Joel Riethmuller's outstanding season as part of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys' NRL squad has earned him a new two-year contract.
The Cowboys' decision to sign the former Tully junior until the end of the 2013 season was announced today and continues a year to remember for Riethmuller, who made his NRL debut in round 14 against Manly at Brookvale Oval.
The 26-year-old has now made four appearances for North Queensland, as well as taking his InTrust Super Cup career games total past 100 as a key member of the second-placed Northern Pride.
Riethmuller, who has also spent time with the Ipswich Jets, said he was happy he could continue his NRL career close to home and that his playing future had been settled for at least the next two seasons.
He is keen on challenging for a more permanent place in the Cowboys' pack in 2012.
"It's good to have something secured and to know where I'm headed," Riethmuller said.
"I would have been stoked with one NRL game, but I've played four.
"This definitely gives me something to look forward to.
"I know that next year if I train hard, and play well, hopefully I'll get a few more games.
"It's good to be close to home and comfortable.
"I think coming home has helped improve my footy and I wouldn't have got this opportunity if I hadn't come back home."
Riethmuller's signing adds to the Cowboys' back-row depth, which also includes Dallas Johnson, Tariq Sims, Gavin Cooper, Glenn Hall, Scott Bolton, Cory Paterson, Dane Hogan, Blake Leary, Ricky Thorby and NYC standout Jason Taumalolo.
He said he welcomed the challenge of forcing his way into the top 17 on a more consistent basis.
"All clubs are the same. You're always going to have that challenge," he said.
"It's a challenge I'm willing to take on and hopefully it will make me a better football player."
Riethmuller said the highlight of his rookie NRL season so far was the key second-half try he scored in the Cowboys' victory against Newcastle at Ausgrid Stadium in round 18.
He also has good memories of his debut at Brookvale, even though NQ lost that game with their co-captains Johnathan Thurston and Matthew Scott on State of Origin duty.
"Just getting out there for my first game .... I think I was running around like a headless chook for 20 minutes," he joked.
"I got a couple of good shots on some big boys - they were good moments."
