Source: www.newcastleknights.com.auBen Rogers has announced his NRL retirement due to injury. On a positive note, he will commence a role with the Hunter Sports Group as Corporate Sales Executive.
The 26-year-old made his NRL debut whilst playing for the Panthers in 2004. He also spent time at South Sydney and St George before arriving in Newcastle in 2009.
After eight years in the NRL; Rogers played 30 games for the Knights and a total of 83 NRL games.
In Round 3 of the 2011 season, Rogers dislocated his shoulder and required major surgery for the second time. The five-eighth started his rehabilitation process but medical advice was to retire from the sport.
"After some time to think about my options, it was a no-brainer to retire for the quality of my life after football," Rogers said.
"The surgeon told me if I play I would tear my rotator cuff again and he would not be able to repair it. That would mean I would not be able to do even the simplest of things with my arm.
"I have a young family to think about and when I think I wouldn't be able to wrestle or play some backyard footy with the kids, that made the decision for me in the end.
"I would like thank everyone at the Knights, in particular Rick Stone for all he has done for me on and off the field.
"It is a great Club and I feel privileged to have spent some time here. The members and supporters of Newcastle, I thank them for their support too.
"I am ready to turn the page and start my new role with the Hunter Sports Group. I look forward to remaining in Newcastle and the real bonus is I will still have contact with the football side of things."
Rogers will commence his role with the Hunter Sports Group in November.
"It is always tough for a player to retire not on their own terms but especially due to an injury that could affect the rest of your life," Knights CEO Matthew Gidley said.
"Ben should be proud of his achievements on the field and also off it.
"This year he is the Knights' nomination for the Ken Stephen Medal, which is a reflection of the outstanding contribution Ben has made to the community during his time at the Club.
"His employment with the Hunter Sports Group is also an indication of the likeable character he is and it is pleasing we can provide a transition process for him post his football career.
"Whilst we farewell Ben from the football field, we welcome him to head office."
