South Wales sign former International Jamie Rooney
Sat February 4, 2012
South Wales Scorpions have pulled off a coup by securing the services of England international and experienced Super League half-back Jamie Rooney for the 2012 season.

The club completed the signing yesterday from French side Limoux Grizzlies where he has spent the last few months.

He is in line to make his South Wales Scorpions debut this Saturday against a Wigan Warriors XIII at The Gnoll in Neath (kick-off 3pm) and has been named in a 22-man squad.

The 32-year old Rooney won four England caps in 2006 playing against France, Tonga (twice) and Samoa. He is an experience Super League player having turned out over 150 times at the highest level for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Castleford Tigers.

Rooney made his professional league debut in 1999 for Featherstone Rovers when he was just 19 years old and quickly became the first choice scrum-half. In two consecutive seasons, he scored more than 100 points in the side's first 10 games while he also made the Featherstone record books for most points in a season.

Eventually he became one of the few players to turn out for all three "Calder" clubs making just a handful of appearances for Castleford before his career really took off, signing for Wakefield and playing in seven successful Super League seasons where he was both a proven try scorer and goal kicker, helping them to the play-offs in 2004.

Current South Wales Scorpions coach Dave Clark brought him to Barrow Raiders in 2009 and helped them to win the Championship Grand Final, scoring three goals as they beat Halifax 26-18. He spent another two seasons there before moving to France.

Clark said: "I know Jamie obviously from when I coached him at Barrow so I know what he'll bring to the Scorpions regarding performance and ability and his attributes as a player. His communication and direction skills, experience and his superb kicking game are something that the Scorpions are desperate of really. He fills a lot of vacancies that we have in our side.

"He'll be a really important player for the Scorpions in where we finish this year. He fills a key position in being a half-back which will strengthen that area. I can see a few good combinations going on with Nathan Mossop, who he's played alongside before, and also with Steve Parry and Shaun Owens. We have four really good pivots there who will ask questions of sides that we're playing this year."

Rooney is delighted to be joining the Scorpions and says that he was Clark's influence that brought him down to South Wales.

"I'm pretty excited really from what Dave's been telling me," Rooney said. "I know Dave and I know what he brings to a team as a coach so I'm looking forward to playing under him again. I've kept in touch with him since I've been in France and I've a lot of respect and time for him so hopefully I can help Scorpions and Dave get promoted to the Championship. That will really help the game in Wales.

"I'm looking forward to Saturday, meeting the lads for the first time, and having a run out against Wigan. I know we'll be facing primarily a young Wigan side but they're the best set of youngsters in the country. I faced Wigan under 21s when I was playing for Barrow's first team and they beat us, that's how good they are. It's going to be a tough game.

"Moving to Wales will be a new experience for me. I've only ever been to Wales twice before, for two Millennium Magic games, and that was just for the day each time. I scored a try in the first game, hopefully I can get a few more this season playing for the Scorpions."

The Scorpions' 22-man squad for Saturday also includes the previously unannounced Alan Pope and Alistair McDonald, both of whom have been signed on trial contracts.

Pope made two appearances for the Scorpions in 2010, scoring one try. But the 26-year old utility player stepped back a division to play for Valley Cougars last year where he was an instant success scoring 13 tries in 17 appearances in the Conference National earning him a recall for Saturday's game.

McDonald is new to Rugby League and will make his 13-man debut on Saturday. The 28-year old second row forward has been playing for Glamorgan Wanderers for the last four years having previously turned out for Cardiff RFC in the Welsh Rugby Union Premiership.

This means that 14 players will potentially play in Scorpions colours for the first time on Saturday.

South Wales Scorpions open their 2012 campaign this Saturday 4th February with a warm-up match against a Wigan Warriors XIII at The Gnoll in Neath (kick-off 3pm). Tickets for the match can be bought online at www.scorpionsrl.com or in person at the Neath RFC shop in Old Market Street, Neath until 2pm on Friday, otherwise they will then be on sale from 2pm at The Gnoll on the day of the game.

Scorpions squad for Wigan on Saturday: Ashley Bateman, Joe Burke, Phil Carleton, Curtis Cunningham, Neil Dallimore, Dale Evans, Lewis Fox, Dalton Grant, David James, Alistair McDonald, Joe McKenna, Tom Morgan, Nathan Mossop, Shaun Owens, Steve Parry, Rodney Peake, Alan Pope, Lewis Reece, Jamie Rooney, Chris Vitalini, Liam Watton, Callum Wilkinson.

2010 Co-operative All Star Teams
Thu August 26, 2010
by Ian Golden
South Wales Scorpions forward Gil Dudson has been named in the Co-operative Championship 1 All Star Team for 2010.

The Welsh international, who has had an excellent season, is dual-registered with Crusaders in the engage Super League but has been more pro-active with the Scorpions in 2010, making 17 appearances and scoring five tries.

"It's good to be selected," he said. "It's been my first full season playing professional rugby league.

"I'm dual-registered with the Crusaders and I enjoy going back home to South Wales to see my parents every now and again and training and playing alongside the Scorpions boys. With the away trips, I and some of the other players live in Wrexham, so it's not as far for us.

"I'd like to have more a role in the Crusaders next year though - my aim is to have a good pre-season now and see how I get on."

Dudson believes that the Scorpions have a good chance in the first round of the play-offs against Rochdale Hornets at Spotlands on Sunday 5th September (kick-off 3pm).

"We've beaten them once this season," he said. "They gave us a bit of a tuning at their place but if we prepare well and start the game well, we'll have a good chance.

"We started a bit slow against Hunslet on Sunday but in the second half we showed what we were capable of. We showed that we can compete with the best."

Liz Matkin, Head of Sponsorship at The Co-operative, commented: "The 26 players named in the All Stars teams represent the very best talent in The Co-operative Championships and we pass on our congratulations to all those selected after what has been an outstanding regular season in both divisions."

Most of those selected for the All Star teams will be preparing for the 2010 play-offs and competing for a place in The Co-operative Championships Finals day, at Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday September 26. Tickets for the showpiece event of the Championships' season are on sale through the RFL's Ticket Office on 0844 856 1113 or by visiting www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk.
