Schifcofske rates Patten as top of the fullbacks
Thu September 7, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Dally M Fullback of the Year and Canberra Captain Clinton Schifcofske is widely regarded as the man who'll be the difference in Saturday nights game but he believes Luke Patten is the form fullback in the competition.

Schifcofske has enjoyed an amazing season where he's taken on the Canberra captaincy and he also played one State of Origin match for Queensland this year, which was his first in the fullback position after played one match in 2002 as a winger.

When it came to his appraisal of Patten, Schifcofske said, "I think he's the most under rated player in the comp. If he was at another club that didn't have as many big name players he'd be getting the wraps he deserves.

"I think he's been the form fullback of the comp this year and consistently for the past 2 or 3 years."

Patten's football has improved this season where he's been more consistent and the errors that were prone in his game are becoming less. However, Patten's speed to the ball in kick returns and his positional play is still very suspect.

The Bulldogs 30-22 victory against Penrith was Patten's 200th in first grade, which includes 144 for the Bulldogs. Patten scored two tries and has found his home at Belmore after previous stints with Illawarra and St George Illawarra.

Schifcofske has always lifted when playing against the Bulldogs and when the crunch is on this Saturday night, the class of Schifcofske could be the difference when the match winning plays are required.

Canberra's last victory in a semi-final happened in 2000 when they defeated Penrith at Canberra Stadium, although they were desperately unlucky against the Warriors in 2003 when a certain try was bombed in the final two minutes, which saw them eliminated.

Schifcofske said, "In recent years when we made the finals we've just been making up the numbers, a few people might think that this year as well, but in house I think if we can play to our potential we can have a little bit of fun.

"That second half against the Sharks really came out of left field we really missed the steady head of Jason Smith who could have got us through the worry, but we have him back on Saturday night so that's good.

"If you look at both teams on paper they've definitely got the edge and we have to play to our potential to beat them and they probably don't have to to beat us.

"I think if we just play for each other and do our jobs we really give ourselves a chance."

Even though the Bulldogs are struggling with injury problems, Schifcofske noted that there is one very important member of the Bulldogs pack returning and he said,

"Willie Mason, they just ride off the back of him. He's an inspirational player and a leader. Andrew Ryan is as well. They've got some quality guys who get them around the park."

Ticket sales for Saturday night's clash have been very slow and that has been disappointing. It's a 50-50 Finals match with the Bulldogs holding the edge in the forwards but Canberra out in front with Schifcofske, their halves, speed and bench.

Although the Raiders have been dealt a minor blow with winger Craig Frawley ruled out and Marshall Chalk has been promoted to the starting side. Ben Jones was originally named 18th man and he has been added to the Interchange bench. Jason Smith has been confirmed as a starter at five-eighth with Todd Carney moving to halfback. Either Lincoln Withers or Simon Woolford will start at hooker with the other coming off the bench. Raiders coach Matthew Elliott is hoping that Smith will be able to get through 60 minutes.

Canberra have won five out of six matches they've played at Telstra Stadium with their only loss ironically coming against South Sydney this year. The Raiders have won all three clashes at the Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium and the Bulldogs have never won a 'home' Finals match in the four they've hosted. Canberra probably enter the match as slight favourites and if the Bulldogs supporters turn away from the clash than it will only lift the Raiders even more.

The match is all or nothing for Canberra and whilst the Bulldogs are assured of a second chance no matter the result a loss for them will virtually be the end of their season as they desperately need a week off in the hope of getting Reni Maitua, Tony Grimaldi and Roy Asotasi back for the Qualifying Final.

Hannay and Schifcofske win Origin recalls
Mon June 26, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Inform Raiders fullback Clinton Schifcofske and Cowboys centre Josh Hannay have both won State of Origin recalls with injuries to Karmichael Hunt and Steven Bell forcing the Queensland selectors to make three changes.

The other change in the Queensland side is Tonie Carroll also being recalled at the expense of Jacob Lillyman. Carroll was originally selected in the second-row for the second match but withdrew due to injury. Nate Myles has been retained in the starting side but Carroll has been given a spot on the bench.

Schifcofske has been in absolutely outstanding form this season and fully deserves another opportunity at Origin level. Schifcofske played one match for the Maroons in 2002 where he was selected on the wing. Now the Canberra custodian gets his chance in his favourite position and Schifcofske's inclusion will also relieve Johnathan Thurston of the goal kicking duties.

Hannay's selection is a complete surprise but in his only appearance back in 2003 he had an outstanding game where he landed four goals and showed that he's a player who can handle Origin football. Hannay has been in and out of the Cowboys side this year and a big performance in the decider will see clubs queue up to chase his services for next year.

Justin Hodges has been named in the Queensland side but is almost certain to withdraw. The Queensland selectors could possibly be selecting Hodges so that Melbourne duo Billy Slater and Greg Inglis or Bulldogs centre Willie Tonga can get a game under their belts before confirming his replacement.
