Broncos bring Setu home
Sat July 26, 2008

The WOW Brisbane Broncos have announced that exiting young backrower Lagi Setu will join the club for the 2009 season.

Setu, who has now played 24 games for the St George Illawarra Dragons after debuting last year, grew up in south-east Queensland.

He had expressed a desire to come home from Sydney to be with his family and the deal with the Broncos will make that a reality.

Broncos' chief executive Bruno Cullen said the club was delighted to have the rugby union junior agree to terms.

"It was very fortutitous for us that Lagi wanted to come home to southeast Queensland and we were able to make it happen," said Cullen.

"He is an outstanding young prospect who is just beginning his NRL career.

"We believe Lagi has a promising future and will be very pleased to welcome him to the club next year."

Listed at 189 centimetres and weighing 100kg, Setu was born in Auckland before moving to Australia as a boy.

He played his junior days with the Riverview Rugby Union club and went to school at Ipswich Grammar.

Setu was born on February 25, 1988, meaning he will have his 21st birthday just before the 2009 season kicks off.

NRL Rookies Jason Nightingale and Lagi Setu have today agreed to terms with the Dragons until the end of 2008 and Ricky Thorby until the end of 2009.

Nightingale, 20 is a local junior from Renown United and was the Dragons Jersey Flegg "Player of the Year" in 2006. He made his NRL debut in Round six, has played seven NRL games to date and is looking forward to many more with the Dragons.

Nightingale said, "I am a local junior and have always wanted to play NRL with the Dragons. To have been given that opportunity this year is definitely very exciting.

"We have a great group of enthusiastic young players here at the Dragons and some established NRL stars - the opportunity to remain here in that mix is something I am very happy about.

Setu, 19, was recruited to the Dragons last year from Brisbane. The former Australian Schoolboy Rugby Union representative made his NRL debut in Round 2 and has played four games this year.

Setu said, "I am very proud to have come to the Dragons and am very happy to know that I will be staying for at least another year. "It is a great Club with some very talented players across all ages and I look forward to continuing to play my part here.

Thorby, 21, arrived at the Dragons in February from New Zealand looking for an opportunity and went on to make his NRL debut in Round 12 and has played four games to date.

Thorby said, "Getting a start at the Dragons was a dream so I am over the moon to know that I will be here for another two years. I am very grateful to Nathan Brown and Steve Price for giving me an opportunity and I am determined to repay the Club for the faith they have shown in me.

Dragons Chief Executive Peter Doust and Coach Nathan Brown are both as equally pleased the Club has been able to reach agreements to extend the contracts of Nightingale, Setu and Thorby.

Doust said, "Jason, Lagi and Ricky have responded well to the challenges of the NRL and we believe they will continue to develop and contribute significantly to our Club. I know each of these players is excited about the playing roster we have here at the Dragons and the opportunities they have to push for regular selection in the NRL team."

Brown said, "Jason, Lagi and Ricky have all impressed this season and they will only get better. "They will certainly have opportunities here and I am glad they have chosen to stay."

The Dragons today confirm that they have held preliminary discussions with Wendell Sailor as reported in the media but have no further comment on these discussions at this stage.
