Source: www.parraeels.com.auA miracle kick from Mortimer had the crowd sitting on the edge of their seats in the final seconds as they awaited a video referee decision on a Shane Shackleton try that could have them winning or losing the match.
The Pirtek Parramatta Eels' were back at Parramatta Stadium this week for their round 6 clash against the Gold Coast Titans on Easter Sunday and were lucky, scraping through with a victory 22-18 in the final seconds as the video referee awarded the Eels the try.
Despite constant errors, turnovers and ill-discipline the Eels managed to claw their way back into the match after trailing at half-time 10-12.
The Titans were first to score after consecutive errors by the Eels that gave the Gold Coast ample opportunities, Steve Michaels crossing in the corner from a Scott Prince cut out pass to give the Gold Coast the lead 4-0 after ten minutes.
But a Titans error just before the halfway mark gave the Eels an attacking opening moments later and Parramatta thought they had struck back just moments later when Fui Fui Moi Moi had crossed the line, but the video referee deemed that Moi Moi had lost the ball.
The Eels continued to press the Titans' defense ? from the Titans giving too many penalties ? with impressive charges from the likes of Moi Moi and Mannah. Then the Eels struck with Eels season debutant, Jacob Loko, crossing for his first try in the NRL.
The Loko-motive pushed away from Bird and charged over opposite Bodene Thompson to put the Eels on the scoreboard after twenty minutes of play 4-6.
The Eels were running hot and again came close to scoring shortly after Loko's efforts however; Mortimer was pulled short after supporting Horo who had breezed through a gap and next play, the Eels had lost the ball with an attacking raid down the right hand side.
From the mistake William Zillman made a break giving the Titans a great attacking position ten minutes before half-time. The Eels defensive efforts was remarkable, holding the Titans out a numerous occasions, but so much possession to the Titans in addition with repeated sets and the Eels line finally broke when Greg Bird crossed for the Titans second to lead 4-12.
Despite the score being 4-12 to the Titans, the Eels held strong and on the stroke of half-time hit back to bridge the gap by 2 points - 10-12 - from a Jeff Robson kick that rebounded from the goal post, Robson scooping up the ball to slide over under the post.
The Eels were put under immense pressure in the opening stages of the second half - penalties and errors - with the Titans pressing attack on song. Scott Prince the ring master as he never let up, able to give the
Titans consecutive sets of six. But the Eels defence which had not been there last week was there, holding off the Titans' early surge.
But in light of their strong defensive efforts, the Eels still cracked minutes later when William Zillman made light work to simply breeze through tired defenders, scoring under the post to ascend the Titans' lead by 10-18.
The Eels only had themselves to blame - giving the Titans so much possession - as the constant errors and ill-disciplined play became frustrating to watch. But somehow, the Eels managed to stay in it with twenty minutes to go on the clock 10-18.
With the Eels not willing to give up, some luck swung their way when Bodene Thompson was penalized for playing the ball of the mark. The Eels kick found touch twenty metres out and from here, Joel Reddy crossed from a back-line movement to bring the score lines closer, 16-18 with twelve minutes to go.
The Eels new found energy had them attacking in defense, but it was a controversial decision by the referee that had the Blue and Gold crowd baying for blood, denying a Uaisele try without going to the video ref for confirmation.
The disallowed try started from a brilliant individual effort from veteran Luke Burt, who chip kicked to himself, recovering the ball and setting the play in motion for what could have been a wonderful try.
The Eels stayed on the attack with just two minutes remaining and were awarded consecutive sets of six from a Mortimer cross field kick. In the final seconds, the Eels fans were sitting on the edge of their seats, waiting for a video referee decision over a try to Shane Shackleton.
Another Mortimer kick sky rocketed into the air and then dropped to the ground, Shackleton pouncing on the loose ball to score and give the Eels the win on a very happy Easter Sunday, 22-18.
Parramatta Eels 22 (Tries: Jacob Loko, Jeff Robson, Joel Reddy, Shane Shackleton Goals: Luke Burt 3/4) defeated
Gold Coast Titans 18 (Tries: Steve Michaels, Greg Bird, William Zillman Goals: Scott Prince 3/3)
