Sharp: I'm ready to push on
Wed March 7, 2012
Source: www.hullfc.com

Hull FC's Will Sharp has described last season at the Black and Whites as "a steep learning curve", but the winger is confident his experiences in 2011 have improved him as a player.

In a sometimes tough debut season at the KC Stadium, Sharp spent much of the year in and out of the team, often shouldering the blame for Hull's defensive frailties on his flank.

But bursting with a new-found confidence during the start of Super League XVII, Sharp admits he has put last year behind him and is concentrating only on improving each week under head coach Peter Gentle.

"Last year was tough at times, but I knew when I joined Hull that it would be a big step up because of the size of the club," he said.

"It was hard to be out of the team when you just want to get out on the pitch and try to improve, but it was a steep learning curve and I took a lot from it. I now feel a bit more settled here with it being my second year and I feel a lot more confident at training.

"I'm not thinking about last year, but it did teach me a lot. I'm now just trying to keep things simple and having Tony (Martin) and Buster (Brett Seymour) inside me is really helping me.

"Hopefully there is more to come too because we are still coming together as a team and there is a lot of improvement in all of us."

Voted as the supporters' man of the match during yesterday's 14-10 victory over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the KC Stadium, Sharp was rewarded for a display bursting with energy, the former Harlequins player faultless in defence in testing conditions and looking threatening when hitting up the ball attack.

His all-round performance was capped with his first try of the season as he finished a well-worked move in the right corner and Sharp says getting off the mark for 2012 will give him a lot of confidence.

"I'm a winger and every winger loves to score tries, so to get my first of the year was really pleasing," he said.

"It was a really good try and the guys inside me showed a lot of skill to set it up in those conditions. It was a simple finish for me, but I can take a lot of confidence from it.

"I was quite happy with my performance overall. I enjoy helping out the forwards and getting my hands on the ball. It's good to get involved and I try to take the ball up as much as I can.

"I've got a lot more confidence in defence too. I practise taking the kicks all week at training, but I did that last season. It's a lot different trying to take them in front of 11,000 or 12,000 people, but I'm feeling confident and they seem to be sticking."

Hat trick hero Sharp excited about facing Melbourne Storm

Harlequins Rugby League winger Will Sharp - who scored a hat trick in Sunday's victory over Catalans Dragons - says he cannot wait for the arrival of Melbourne Storm this weekend.

The NRL champions flew in from Australia earlier this week and will face Harlequins in the World City Challenge at the Twickenham Stoop this Sunday (2pm KO).

"Melbourne are a class team with some of the best rugby players in the world," said Sharp.

"It is great to be given the chance to play against people that you admire in that way and experience firsthand what puts them among the greatest players of our time.

"Last year's World City Challenge against the Manly Sea Eagles was fantastic; a really fast exciting game and a great atmosphere. I'm hoping for more of the same when Melbourne arrive."

Sharp faces Storm on the back of a spectacular hat trick against Catalans which powered Harlequins to their first victory of 2010.

Speaking about his acrobatic second try which saw him leap several feet into the air to take the ball and land it, Sharp said:

"I remember seeing Danny Orr get the ball and hoping that he'd send the kick in to my corner. He started running with it - as though he was attacking - which drew the opposition towards him. Then he kicked it high above the defence for me to leap into the air and ground as quickly as I could.

"I'd been staying behind after training a lot last week, practising that sort of catch and it paid off."

Tickets for Harlequins v Melbourne are available now for just £10 adults, £5 under 16's.
