Sims to captain 22-man squad for first trial
Tue January 31, 2012
Source: www.cowboys.com.au

Forward Ashton Sims will captain the North Queensland Cowboys for the first time in the NRL pre-season trial against the Brisbane Broncos at Redcliffe on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old is one of 12 Cowboys with NRL experience who have been included in the 22-player squad by coach Neil Henry for the first of three hit-outs before round one against the Titans at Dairy Farmers Stadium on 3 March.

That dozen includes Kane Linnett, who will be playing his first game for North Queensland since arriving from the Sydney Roosters, and ex-Canberra Raider David Milne who is on a train and trial contract with the Cowboys after signing with the Mackay Cutters in the Intrust Super Cup.

Two other triallists ? back-rower Ethan Lowe and outside back Chad Grintell ? are also in the squad.

With co-captain Johnathan Thurston on Indigenous All Stars duties and other halves options Robert Lui, Ben Jones and Michael Morgan injured, Henry has turned to Toyota Cup halfback Sam Foster to start in the halves alongside Ray Thompson.

Northern Pride's Italian international Ryan Ghietti will be on the interchange bench, along with Wayne Ulugia, Kyle Feldt and Chris Grevsmuhl who are still eligible for Toyota Cup football, as is starting back-rower Jason Taumalolo.

Saturday's match at Dolphin Oval kicks off at 7.15pm.

Cowboys blast their way to third place
Sun July 31, 2011
Source: www.cowboys.com.au

Prop Ashton Sims and five-eighth Ray Thompson scored their first NRL tries for the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys as their side again came from behind to beat Penrith 30-18 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

The two tries were bookends in another strong second half from the Cowboys, who trailed by six points at half time before out-scoring the Panthers 24-6 in the second 40 minutes.

The win, and the 12-point winning margin, allowed NQ to leapfrog their rivals, Brisbane, and St George Illawarra, who play South Sydney on Sunday, into third on the NRL ladder with just five rounds remaining in the home and away season.

With 30 points, both Queensland clubs, who meet in the next Dairy Farmers match in a fortnight, should be guaranteed positions in this season's finals series ? the Cowboys' first since 2007.

It was the Cowboys' third victory in four starts without their influential co-captain Johnathan Thurston.

The champion halfback had another session of running pre-match and could yet be available for the Broncos game on Friday 12 August.

Last night's game was a finals-type defensive battle for the first 25 minutes.

Playing in their green socks for National Tree Day, the Cowboys twice came close to scoring with second-rower Gavin Cooper losing the ball over the line in the 14th minute before Brent Tate was cut down just short not long after.

Eventually it was the Panthers who bagged the first try with centre Brad Tighe beating three defenders in a dive over from dummy-half on the back of a Cowboys error deep inside their own half.

Penrith lost halfback Luke Walsh to the sin bin for a professional foul following a break by Matthew Bowen and back-up NQ hooker James Segeyaro added to the Panthers' pain a minute later with a solo try to bring his team level in the 33rd minute.

However, the end of the half turned sour for Bowen who spilled a kick from Penrith debutante Harry Siejka and the ball ended up in the hands of winger Adrian Purtell who cut inside to score.

Sims reached out for his first try for the Cowboys in the first minute of the second half and then Segeyaro made it a double with a plunge over from dummy-half to give his team the lead for the first time.

Two bombs from Bowen led to tries in quick succession to Brent Tate, his first at home, and Ashley Graham, his club-leading 11th of the season, to see North Queensland kick 14 points clear.

Although Penrith, who lost lock Luke Lewis to concussion right on half time, did manage to break through via Purtell from long range with seven minutes left, Thompson finished off the job for the Cowboys by getting a hand to his own grubber kick to finally score an NRL try in his 24th appearance.

Both lock Dallas Johnson, who had a team-high 45 tackles, and halfback Ben Jones were hit by cramps late in the game, while the Cowboys lost winger Kalifa Faifai Loa to a hamstring strain which could force him out of Friday night's match against Canterbury.
