Despite strong competition from rival clubs forward Ben Smith has re-signed with the Pirtek Parramatta Eels for a further two years, paving the way for him to become another one of the Club's one-club men.

Smith, 27, has proved himself one of the Eels' most consistent performers since he joined the Club in 2003.

Head coach Stephen Kearney said his re-signing was a huge boost to the team both on and off the field.

"Ben's a fine example of the type of player we want at this Club," Kearney said.

"He's a huge part of the culture we're building here and that's thanks to his positive attitude and his work ethic.

"On and off the field he is someone our guys look up to and his presence has a big effect on the group - his leadership is a major part of what makes him such a valuable player."

A return to the field following an early-season pectoral injury isn't too far away for the Werris Creek junior, who said he was excited to re-commit to the Eels despite their tough start to the 2012 season.

"It's hard for people to see at the moment due to our results but there's something really special being built here and I'm just glad I can be part of it," Smith said.

"I love the Club and I've been here my whole career, so I've got some great memories growing up playing footy here? but what I'm most excited about are the next couple of years.

"I wouldn't be re-signing if I didn't believe in what Steve is doing and the plan we've got.

"We're all frustrated with our start to the season but I know we'll come out the other end a better side, and I'm really looking forward to it."

Scans confirmed Parramatta Eels forward Ben Smith required surgery for his damaged pectoral muscle suffered in last weekend's trial match against Penrith.

Smith underwent surgery today and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.

Eels Coach Stephen Kearney said:

"Ben's obviously very disappointed but there's positive news in the fact he's a good chance to return to the field later this season," Kearney said.

"He's an important part of our squad and losing him is a blow for us, but fortunately we have a few players who can cover his position."
