Source: www.wiganwarriors.comWigan Warriors can today confirm they have signed 23 year old Australian half-back, Tim Smith, for the remainder of this season plus 2009.
Smith is expected to arrive in the UK once his work-permit has been approved to link up with his new Wigan team mates.
Smith has previously played for the Parramatta Eels Club in the NRL where he made 71 appearances since 2005. He represented Australian Schoolboys in 2002 and in 2005 he won the 'Rookie of the Year Award' at the prestigious Dally 'M' awards ceremony.
Speaking about the signing, Chairman Ian Lenagan said:
"Tim is a talented half-back with an excellent kicking game and an outstanding record in try assists in the NRL. His signing for 2009 means that Wigan will have three kicking playmakers in Tommy Leuluai, Mark Riddell and Tim to help fill the gap caused by Trent Barrett's early departure which is proving very difficult to fill at late notice for 2009. Whilst it will take a while for Tim to be fully match-fit, his 2008 arrival strengthens the squad for the remainder of the season and provides an additional playmaker for the run in to the Playoffs.
"We acknowledge some risks - reflected in the Contract - in signing Tim after his early-season illness difficulties but Tim now feels ready to re-launch his Rugby League career away from the Sydney media pressure. We believe the supportive and professional environment at the Wigan Club is ideal to help him achieve this.
"He is a young player of outstanding talents who can add a new dimension to our attacking options and we look forward to seeing him in action with the Wigan Club in the near future."
Tim Smith added,
"I am really looking forward to joining the Wigan Club and am grateful for the Warriors for giving me the opportunity to re-launch my playing career. My aim is to impress the management, coaching staff and fans and to win something with Wigan. My personal problems have been well documented but they are now behind me and I want to concentrate only on playing footy."

Source: www.parraeels.com.auPirtek Parramatta Eels halfback Tim Smith has asked for and been given leave on personal grounds and will miss Friday's Telstra Premiership match against Manly at Parramatta Stadium.
Smith met with coaching staff and team mates after training today to inform them of his decision.
He later confirmed he is suffering from Bipolar Disorder.
Parramatta Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald commended Smith for his decision.
"We have been very supportive of Tim and his situation and we will continue to support him," Mr. Fitzgerald said.
"It is good that Tim has come out publicly to say he has got Bipolar Disorder and that in this case it is important to not there has been no incident that's triggered this situation.
"The primary thing now is for Tim to be doing what he and his medical advisors think is best for him and we will give him all the support he needs to get better."The below is a prepared statement that Tim Smith read out at this afternoon's media conference.
Tim Smith: This morning I made a request to the club to be stood down from this week's game. The coaching staff and club officials have agreed to grant me this leave. I have just had a meeting with my team mates to tell them of my actions and where I'm at.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 18 months ago and in this time have been seeking professional advice and taking prescribed medication to try and help me deal with the day to day life of someone with Bipolar.
I am not using Bipolar Disorder as an excuse for anything that has happened in the past or my decision today. However I am not coping with the constant media pressure and public scrutiny.
The hardest thing about this has been telling my team mates, who have been extremely supportive and understanding, as well as the Parramatta club, and my family and close friends.
Thank you.
- The Parramatta Club will be making no further comment at this time.
