Mate against Mates at the Twickenham Stoop
Tue October 24, 2006
Source: www.quins.co.uk

The Federation Shield is a new concept involving two nations from both the southern and northern hemisphere, all part of the longer term build up to the Rugby League World Cup which will be held in Australia and New Zealand in 2008.

The tournament kicked off with a big double headed fixture at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium last Sunday when Tonga beat Samoa 18-10 and England beat France 26-10. Both winners meet this Sunday at the Twickenham Stoop.

The final of the Federation Shield will take place on Sunday November 12 at Widnes' Halton Stadium.

Harlequins club captain Rob Purdham had an outstanding debut as captain of his country last Sunday at Headingley in the win over France. Purdham will feel right at home at the Stoop for his next mission in charge although he will line up against two Quins RL teammates in blockbusting prop forward and Tonga captain Solomon Haumono and centre Tyrone Smith.

Haumono and Smith were two stand out performers against Samoa on Sunday, the game played as a curtain-raiser to England v France. Haumono was named man of the match.

Adding more interest to Sunday's game for Londoners will be the return of former London Broncos captain Jim Dymock who is now coach of Tonga.

Tonga's victory over Samoa was actually worth double because the fixture also counted towards the 2008 World Cup Qualifying competition's Pacific Group. It was the last game in the Pacific Group and Tonga's victory saw them come from third to first and, together with Fiji, qualify for the 2008 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

England head coach Paul Cullen who coached Purdham many years ago at Whitehaven is impressed by Rob's maturity: "He won't be put off because he's facing two of his own club mates. He's too good a professional for that but it will be a challenge for him."

Sunday's meeting at the Twickenham Stoop brings together the top two nations in the Federation Shield table.

Cullen will name his team to play against Tonga on Thursday and he added: "We just want to check out the bumps and bruises from Sunday's win over France and then we can think about our approach to the game".

England play Tonga at 3pm at the Twickenham Stoop on Sunday 29th October. Tickets start at just £1 children and £10 adults.
