Stagg to have shoulder surgery
Wed October 25, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Brisbane utility David Stagg will have exploratory surgery on his right shoulder next Monday with the worst case scenario being a reconstruction and being out of action for six months.

Stagg missed three weeks after injuring his shoulder in the Broncos round 16 victory against Manly but was back for the remainder of the season where he was outstanding in Brisbane's finals campaign despite playing under the pain of the shoulder injury.

An arthrogram last week failed to reveal major structural damage and an arthroscopy has been scheduled for Monday.

Brisbane club doctor Peter Friis said, "The arthroscope is required to assess the instability in his right shoulder.

"Nothing too serious was obvious in the initial scan, so there is a possibility that David may only require minor surgery. However, if a reconstruction is needed, he will be sidelined for up to six months."

Stagg is hopeful for the best but is fearing the worst and facing six months on the sidelines despite the relevations of no major structural damage.

The Queensland representative said, "It never felt the same after the day I hurt it.

"Obviously I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't require a reconstruction, but if that is what is required to fix the problem, then so be it. The doctors will decide my fate."

Stagg played for Queensland in the opening match of the State of Origin series this year in the second row position. He played most of the season in the back-row and was later moved by coach Wayne Bennett to the centres in a decision that worked wonders for both Stagg and the Broncos.
