Robert Tanielu retires from NRL due to injury
Mon January 15, 2007

After his second serious neck injury suffered in Rd 21 of 2006 Cowboys Forward Robert Tanielu announced today that he will cease participation in the National Rugby League based on medical grounds.

Coach Graham Murray said, "it's always disappointing to lose a player of Robs' calibre to an injury, especially when it is something out of the players' control. Rob has been a strong club man and we will miss his presence both on and off the field."

Robert confirmed his decision after consulting with medical specialists, football staff and his family.

"The Cowboys looked at all options and medical advice in the hope Rob would be able to continue his playing role with the club. Unfortunately the risk of further injury was too great. Rob has been a wonderful contributor for this club and we wish him and his family nothing but the best," said NQ Toyota Cowboys CEO Peter Parr.

Tanielu aiming for Cowboys comeback, Bowman successful surgery
Sat October 28, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
North Queensland have received two bits of good news with veteran centre Paul Bowman confident of being back next year after successful surgery and prop forward Robert Tanielu is hopeful of making it back onto the field next year.

Tanielu sustained a serious neck injury during the Cowboys shock victory against eventual Premiers Brisbane in July this season and spent five days in hospital with a bruised spinal cord. The incident happened when he fell in an awkward position after a collision with former Broncos and now Cowboys winger Scott Minto. Tanielu was urged to retire from Cowboys medical officials at the time but is aiming to be back for pre-season training commening Monday week (November 6).

Cowboys Football Manager Peter Parr said, "We expect that he'll be back at the start of training. He's due to see a specialist not long after that and will be able to make a decision after that.

"I know he's very determined in his own mind to continue playing if possible. Hopefully, we can all make a common-sense decision.

"If he wants to continue playing he's got a contract here. We'll keep an open mind on the whole thing until we receive an updated report on his condition from the specialist.

"Ultimately it'll be a decision between medical staff and Robert. We obviously don't want him putting himself at undue risk."

Tanielu has been training in the Cowboys gym during the off-season and will begin pre-season training with non-contact work until his long-term future has been fully assessed.

There were fears that Bowman would be forced into retirement. Whilst he's not yet out of danger, he is now on track to be back for next year after undergoing surgery to repair a bulging disc in his neck. Without surgery, the 30-year-old wouldn't have been allowed to play next year.

Bowman said, "I'll be able to start training but I'm not going to be doing any contact work until after I have another MRI scan done in November.

"I see the specialist again in early December and I've got to get a clearance. I saw him a week or two ago and he was pretty happy with how everything went.

"Hopefully the scans are good and hopefully I'll be doing everything by early to mid-December."

The Cowboys will be sweating on positive reports for Tanielu and Bowman as both players are key figures if they are to bounce back in 2007 after a horror 2006 season where problems plagued North Queensland on and off the field.
