More injuries see two debutants for Raiders
Tue April 3, 2012
Source: www.raiders.com.au

Canberra have named two debutants on the bench for this weekend's clash against the Warriors on Easter Sunday, with Jarrad Kennedy and Mark Nicholls poised to make their NRL debuts.

Kennedy and Nicholls have been in good form for the Raiders feeder club Mounties and come into the side for Brett White and Joel Thompson, who both picked up injuries against the Cowboys on Monday night.

White suffered a season ending knee injury after rupturing his ACL and will undergo reconstructive surgery to repair the injury tomorrow, which requires nine months of recovery time.

It was a devastating blow for the Raiders prop who played all but one of the Raiders NRL Matches in 2011 and had once again started the season in top form.

Raiders utility Joel Thompson is facing between 3-4 weeks on the sideline with an ankle injury, after scans revealed lateral ankle ligament damage.

Raiders Coach David Furner said the team wasn't going to blame the growing injury toll for the loss to the Cowboys and said he had confidence that the players named this week could some into the team and help the team to a win over New Zealand.

"It's frustrating and we've had our fair share of injuries, but we can't use it as an excuse," Furner said. "We'll have two debutants this week with Jarrad Kennedy and Mark Nicholls who have been in good form for Mounties and they'll bring energy and excitement to the team."

"If the 17 players who go onto the field this weekend with the attitude of winning the game we'll get the win."

Raider's representative prop David Shillington hasn't been named in the side, with his recovery from an oblique injury to be reassessed later in the week.

Thompson re-signs with the Raiders
Sat September 11, 2010

Canberra Raiders rising star Joel Thompson has continued the Raiders recent run of re-signings, by agreeing to a new two year extension to keep him at the club until the end of 2013.

Thompson was under contract with the club until the end of 2011, but has been a key priority for the Raiders, after showing some brilliant form in the 2010 season before succumbing to a groin injury.

Beginning the year as an Indigenous All-Star, Thompson went on to be 18th man for Country Origin and at one stage led the Raiders try scoring list after a stunning beginning to the NRL season.

Speaking at Raiders HQ Today, Thompson said he was happy to remain with the team he loved playing for and said family was also a part of his decision to stay with the club.

"We've got a great bunch of blokes here at the club and we all love playing together and there's a feeling we can have plenty of success if we all stay together," Thompson said. "I also have my mum living in Queanbeyan and plenty of other family around so I didn't really want to go anywhere."

Thompson was a part of the premiership winning Toyota Cup squad in 2008, but missed the Grand Final through injury. Several members of that winning side have already committed to the Raiders in recent times.

Josh Dugan, Jarrod Croker, Travis Waddell, Shaun Fensom, Daniel Vidot, Michael Picker and Drury Low are all on the Raiders books at the moment and Thompson said he hoped the same success would now come at senior level.

"Obviously we had that team back in 2008 which won the competition and we've all decided to stay here and try and win one at NRL level now."

Raiders Coach David Furner said the club was ecstatic to have a talent like Thompson for another three seasons and said his form this year was too good to allow time for other clubs to come in.

"Joel was one of our best players before he was injured this year and he's shown his versatility by being able to play centre or in the back row," Furner said. "We've got a proud history of developing junior talent at the Raiders and Joel is one of a number NRL players we have that have come through the under 20's."
