Toopi ruled out for five months
Thu March 20, 2008

Leeds Rhinos centre Clinton Toopi has been ruled out of action for up to five months after undergoing surgery on his shoulder.

Toopi suffered a dislocated shoulder in the Carnegie World Club Challenge win over Melbourne at the end of February and underwent a shoulder reconstruction last weekend. Following the operation, he has been ruled out until August but he is expected to be back before the end of the season.

Commenting on the news Head Physiotherapist Meirion Jones said, "The operation was a complete success and we have done everything possible to make sure that Clinton makes a full recovery. He has had the operation straight away and the surgeon is happy with how that went. There was slightly more damage that we initially thought which has lengthened his rehabilitation slightly but we are confident of having Clinton back playing in the next five months."

New Zealand international Clinton Toopi has been ruled out of action for three to four months for Leeds Rhinos after dislocating his shoulder in the Carnegie World Club Challenge win over Melbourne last Friday.

Toopi will have surgery to repair the damaged caused before beginning rehabilitation work to rebuild the strength in his shoulder.

Commenting on the news Head Coach Brian McClennan said, "We are really disappointed for Clinton that he will be out for a long period of time. However, we are also happy that he got to play a part in becoming a World Champion for 2008 but it was a high price to pay. Toops will handle the set back really well, he will rehab well and I have no doubt he will come back stronger.

"Ashley Gibson has been through a similar process of recovery from a major injury, albeit to his knee last season, and the way he has worked to get back to full fitness is why he will get first bite at the centre spot this Friday at Castleford. We are excited for him. It is unfortunate that for him to get his opportunity, Clinton had to suffer his injury but that is the nature of sport. We have every confidence in our programme that young players coming through will do a good job when they are given their chance and that especially applies to Ashley,"
added McClennan.
