The South Sydney Rabbitohs have one of the richest histories in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and have strengthened their season ticketed Membership to over 6,500 with over 12,000 total members in 2008.

Vagana clarifies reports of a pending retirement
Wed March 19, 2008
Source: www.souths.com.au

Rabbitohs senior player Nigel Vagana would like to clarify reports that he is contemplating retirement after a setback with injury at the start of the 2008 season.

"I've spoken to the coaching staff and the players and I've been granted the opportunity to undergo another four weeks of pre-season training and rehabilitation to get myself right for this season," Vagana said.

"I've got a lower back and hamstring problem which is holding me back, and rather than try and push on and play with the injuries, I'm going to take four weeks out and get myself right, which I think is best for the team.

"I didn't start pre-season training with the team until January this year after the World Cup Qualifiers and the All Golds game, and my body isn't quite ready for the new season.

"I'm 33 years old and need to make sure that my body is right to play week-in and week-out. I still feel that I have a lot to offer South Sydney and I want to be 100% fit so I can help the team make it through to the finals and play my best at the business end of the season.

"At this stage retirement isn't on the cards, but if it gets to a point where I can't perform at my best each week then it is something that I need to look at. In saying that I still feel as though I have a lot to offer and I'll be doing my best to get back on the field, 100 per cent fit, for the Rabbitohs in four weeks time."

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are the most successful Club in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. In 1925, South Sydney was dubbed 'The Pride of the League' and the Rabbitohs are known as this to this day. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the 8000 Members of the Club.
