Vella extends his stay at Rovers

Hull Kingston Rovers first team captain Mick Vella has extended his contract for a further two years, keeping him at Rovers until the end of the 2011 Super League season.

Vella who originally signed a three year deal from NRL side Parramatta Eels in 2007, and would have been at the club until the end of 2009, has today extended his stay by committing to the club for a further two years.

Arguably in the prime of his career Vella has a presence on the field that demands respect, consistently performing each week the reliable prop forward has a hugely positive influence on the whole team via his role as club captain.

A key figure in Hull KR's plans for the future Head Coach Justin Morgan is delighted that he has extended his stay. "It's great news that Mick has committed to the club until the end of 2011. Mick has firmly established himself in the side since arriving at Craven Park, he capped a string of magnificent performances by collecting the club's Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year at the end of 2007, which shows the character that he possesses," Morgan stated.

Handed the captaincy of the club earlier this year Vella has relished the opportunity to lead the side both on and off the field and commented: "We have a fantastic set of players that work well together at the club, I feel at home here and thoroughly enjoy playing for Hull Kingston Rovers. I'm looking forward to spending the coming years alongside some great players and coaching staff."

Vella named Hull KR Captain

Crowned 2007 Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year at the end of this season, Mick Vella has this week been named Hull Kingston Rovers Captain for what promises to be an extremely exciting 2008 season for the Robins.

Former captain James Webster, and new recruits Ben Galea, Clint Newton and Shaun Briscoe will join forces with Vella in helping him lead the squad to victory next year, as Head Coach Justin Morgan also calls on their leadership skills as Senior Players.

Since arriving at Craven Park the NRL star has been a welcomed addition to the Red and Whites, and played a key role in ensuring his side secured Super League status this year.

"James Webster has done a fantastic job for us over the last couple of years and is still very much involved at a senior level; he has tremendous leadership skills and will compliment Mick on his new role. Mick is a player with huge amounts of experience and talent, not only he is highly respected within the game, but was also wiped the board at the Player of The Year Awards Night being voted Players Player of the Year after his first season in Super League, - the highest accolade a player can receive, which demonstrates to me that he is the best man for the job. As a player Mick has great leadership skills and will be instrumental in leading the team to the next level," remarked Head Coach Justin Morgan.

Mick Vella commented: "I'm very proud to be asked to be captain and feel it a great personal honour. We have a fantastic set of players that work well together and I'm looking forward to working alongside the senior players to face challenges of next season."
