Source: www.panthers.com.auThe Penrith Panthers have downed the Sydney Roosters 18-0 at Allianz Stadium in their Round 2 clash.
A fantastic defensive effort was the basis for the victory, with the Panthers taking full advantage of their limited chances.
The Roosters made plenty of mistakes, letting off the Panthers on several occasions, but some fantastic goal-line defence kept the Roosters to nil.
Despite the Roosters having the better chances in the first half, it was the Panthers who took early advantage of field possession, through and unlikely exponent in Sam McKendry.
McKendry burst onto the ball close to the ruck, bouncing away from Jake Friend, Mitchell Pearce, Lama Tasi and running through Anthony Minichiello to score a great try. Luke Walsh added the extras, and after 15 minutes, the Panthers led 6-0.
They almost had another chance to add to that a couple of minutes later, as Kevin Kingston split the Roosters up the middle and put Travis Burns away. Burns got to the 20m line, but was cut down by Sam Perrett, and lost the ball in the play-the-ball.
This signalled a swing in momentum, as the Roosters started to control possession and field position. They looked to be over in the 25th minute, as Boyd Cordner chased through a short Mitchell Pearce grubber.
Panthers fullback Lachlan Coote beat Cordner to the ball, but knocked it on in the process and the Roosters had a drop-out.
They had another couple of chances in the next five minutes, but a the Panthers were able to cover some sloppy kicking from Mitchell Pearce, and took advantage when they returned to the Roosters end three minutes later.
Luke Walsh ran at the line and got an offload to Danny Galea, who popped a good inside ball to Michael Jennings. Jennings then jinked past three Roosters before reaching out to score and further extend the Panthers lead. Walsh then converted the try, and after 35 minutes the Panthers led 12-0.
A late Roosters raid came to nothing, as the Panthers took the 12-0 lead into half time.
Again the Roosters had the dominant start to the second half, with possession and field position putting the Panthers under plenty of pressure, but their resolute defence held strong, as they kept the Roosters scoreless.
They had one try ruled out in the 56th minute when Michael Jennings flick pass to Etu Uaisele was called forward, but it wasn't long before they were on the board.
Just a minute later Jennings pounced on a loose pass by Anthony Minichiello, running 40m to the line to score. Walsh converted to extend the lead to 18-0, and the Panthers started to control the play.
On the back of a monster hit from Jared Waerea-Hargreaves on Danny Galea, the Roosters gained some ascendency, but once again, they were unable to take advantage, this time Lama Tasi dropping the ball 5m out from the try-line.
From that point on the game boiled out, with the Panthers continuing to attack the Roosters line, but unable to strike the killer blow.
The score remained 18-0 at the finish, with coach Ivan Cleary picking up his first points as Panthers coach, and Penrith holding a side to nil for the first time in a long time.
Penrith Panthers 18 (Michael Jennings 2, Sam McKendry Tries; Luke Walsh 3/3 Goals) defeated Sydney Roosters 0 at Allianz Stadium
