The devastating injury toll from last weekends NRL action has claimed another victim with Cronulla's Greg Bird likely to be ruled out for four weeks with a broken thumb.
Initially we reported that Bird was set to miss eight weeks requiring surgery on the thumb but this afternoon he received better news that the bone was not displaced and will return in half the time.
"The bone hasn't been displaced at all and I'm going to get away with just having a cast on it for four weeks and I'll be back straight after that," said Bird.
Bird out for 4 weeks is still terrible news for the Sharks who also have key playmakers Brett Kimmorley and Adam Dykes on the sideline along with goalkicking winger Luke Covell.
Ben Ross is also out for another two weeks through suspension.
The news is compounded today with three Sharks players charged by the match review committee.
Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen. Anthony Watts and winger Misi Talaupapa were hit with contrary conduct charges following an all-in brawl midway through the second half the Sharks loss to the Roosters.
All three Sharks players facing a minimum one-game ban with early guilty pleas.
In other judiciary news Manly's Steve Matai will miss two matches with an early plea for headbutting Wests Tigers forward Chris Heighington
The Rabbitohs Jeremy Smith is facing a one-game ban for striking the head of a Parramatta player.
The Dragons Chase Stanley will escape suspension with an early plea one a a grade one dangerous throw.
