Post match comments from Daniel Anderson, Paul Wellens and Richard Agar following St Helens 28-16 victory over Hull FC to take out the 2008 Challenge Cup Final in front of 82,821 supporters.
St Helens Coach Daniel Anderson:"We almost found a way to lose. I thought we squandered ample opportunities in the first half, we had genuine try-scoring plays.
"I had a real bad feeling at the start of the second half, I thought it was going to come back to bite us.
"We are a very good front-running team but I knew the first try would provide momentum for Hull.
"Credit to us. We were honest for 80 minutes and I think that got us through.
"It was a tough game, I don't think people realise how much the first half took out of us.
"I'm very proud and have been since I came to St Helens. I knew I was coming to a fantastically traditional club with some of the world's great players.
"I'll go home with some fantastic memories and have been very privileged to be the coach."
Lance Todd Trophy Winner Paul Wellens on the early injury to Paul Sculthorpe:"I'm shattered for him.
"I've played with him for a long time. For the success he's had he's the most level-headed down-to-earth guy.
"We'll have a beer for him and try to put a smile on his face. Hopefully it's not as bad as first feared but that's rugby "
Hull FC Coach Richard Agar:"We know we can compete on the big day against the good teams.
"It was there for all to see that we have makeshift players at half-back. This is our third final in four years and there's no reason we can't come back.
"We need to remember this and how it feels and we can't be happy with a brave effort. Next time we come back we want to win the game.
"I think it's indisputable that we gave it everything. I thought we showed tremendous commitment to each other, we were down 10-0 but managed to haul ourselves back into the game."
Agar on RIchard Horne's brave return:"I thought his effort after what he has come back from, in a game like this, was enormous.
"That (the Graham tackle) might have been the best thing for him and I think it would have done his confidence the world of good.
"He got himself up and shook himself down. It was there for everyone to see how underweight he was and his fatigue at the end of the game cost us a little bit.

Source: www.superleague.co.ukSt Helens coach Daniel Anderson paid tribute to Paul Wellens after he claimed his 24th try of a remarkable season in the 32-10 engage Super League victory against Harlequins RL at Knowsley Road.
Wellens, the reigning Man of Steel who looks a decent bet to retain the prestigious award, crossed the line in the second half to give the Challenge Cup winners some much-needed breathing space.
The Great Britain full-back was on the scoresheet in last week's 30-8 cup final win against Catalans at Wembley, and his typically predatory score in the 53rd minute edged Saints 18-10 ahead.
From there they never looked back and Chris Flannery and Lee Gilmour scored to add to first-half efforts from Jason Cayless and James Graham.
"I don't think I've seen him (Wellens) play poorly," admitted Anderson.
"He threw away a couple of passes in the first half but as usual he was in the right position to defuse every kick.
"And he got another try, so it keeps him there or thereabouts for top try-scorer.
"In terms of him winning Man of Steel, I wouldn't argue with that, but it's difficult to pick someone over the course of the year at St Helens because so many players have played well.
"I was really pleased with the performance because they just refused to be slack in the second half."The victory edges Saints two points clear at the engage Super League summit to encourage hopes of finishing top and claiming the league leaders' shield ahead of the play-offs.
"Finishing top is an advantage and if we keep on winning games then we'll be champions," added Anderson. >"But we're more concerned with just playing well."
The visitors' play-off ambitions are receding by the week after six games without a win, but they asked some testing questions of Anderson's men in the first half.
Quins wing Ricki Sheriffe scored two tries - his second a brilliant individual effort - as Saints struggled to find their customary rhythm after last Saturday's Wembley success.
Quins coach McDermott, who revealed Rob Purdham sustained a potentially serious shoulder injury, said:
"We couldn't match them in the second half and in terms of the play-offs our chances are very slim.
"Mathematically we can still get into the play-offs but realistically it's over.
"There's the slimmest of slim chances that we can still get in there - and we will be going for it - but in all reality the play-offs have gone."Report source:
