Wicks sparks Knights recruitment Thu May 31, 2007 Source: www.newcastleknights.com.au The Newcastle Knights 2008 playing roster received another boost last night with the signing of former Knights junior and St George Illawarra prop, Danny Wicks. 21-year-old Wicks will become a Novocastrian next season in a three year deal that will see him at EnergyAustralia Stadium until at least the end of 2010. "I've watched him closely as he's developed under Nathan Brown and the Dragons system," said Knights Coach, Brian Smith. "He was a powerful young man and he's grown into a powerful unit. He's the sort of player who can take us forward very well in the middle of the ruck. "For a big bloke he's got genuine speed and I honestly think as he matures as a man and as a footballer he has the opportunity to be one of the game's leading front rowers." Wicks began his playing days as a Grafton Ghosts junior and made his first grade debut for the Dragons in Round 10, 2006 against the Warriors. His signing continues the Newcastle Knights commitment to recruit players from the club's catchment region and Knights Operations Manager, Stephen Crowe says he expects Wicks to play a long term role at the club. "Danny fills all the criteria we're looking for. He's a country boy from Grafton, he's young at 21 years of age, he's 110 kilos, athletic and he has NRL experience," Crowe said. "We hope he'll have a long career at the club and play his best football here." Meanwhile, Knights front rower, Adam Woolnough has accepted a lucrative deal with Penrith and will pursue new opportunities with the 2003 Premiers next season. Woolnough will remain loyal to the Knights for the remainder of the season, committing to give 100 per cent to his club. "I'm really pleased for Wooly that he's found a new place to apply his trade," Brian Smith said. "He's a genuinely nice bloke, I've enjoyed working with Wooly and we've already chatted about what his goal is for the rest of the season here at the Knights. "I know he wants to go out on the highest possible note which is a mark of the man he is." Woolnough's decision comes with the club's endorsement and the Knights intend to repay his loyalty. "Wooly has been one of the great ambassadors for our club," Crowe said. "A kid from Taree, he's come through the junior ranks, played 100 games and he's in our leadership group for a reason.
