NSW name Origin squad but fail to settle on starting side
Mon May 14, 2012
by rleague
The NSW selectors have named four debutants for the opening State of Origin match at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 23rd May 2012 - three of whom have already played Test football.

Todd Carney, James Tamou and Tony Williams have already represented Australia at International level, but next week will make their debuts.

The journey for Carney has been a remarkable and controversial one and Origin honours would have beckoned earlier for him except off-field dramas put his progress back considerably.

Williams has been suspended for the last seven matches and despite not playing a competition match has been rushed into the NSW side on the back of excellent early season form, an outstanding Four Nations campaign last year and a superb run of form that helped Manly to premiership success in 2011.

Tamou was a controversial selection in the Test side last month as a part of an ARL plan to ensure Tamou would be eligible for Australian honour and not opt for New Zealand.

Jamie Buhrer has come from the clouds to make his representative debut. Buhrer was only linked as a possible Blues selection last week in the papers and once again they were spot on the money.

Out of form duo Jarryd Hayne and Michael Jennings have been selected based on their natural ability to win matches.

NSW coach Ricky Stuart was able to name a squad of 17, but couldn't settle on a 1-13 and four reserves - again leaving the Queenslander's laughing at the Blues indecision.

Greg Bird - Gold Coast Titans
Jamie Buhrer - Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
Todd Carney - Cronulla Sharks
Ben Creagh - St George-Illawarra Dragons
Robbie Farah - Wests Tigers
Paul Gallen [c] - Cronulla Sharks
Jarryd Hayne - Parramatta Eels
Michael Jennings - Penrith Panthers
Luke Lewis - Penrith Panthers
Trent Merrin - St George-Illawarra Dragons
Josh Morris - Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
Mitchell Pearce - Sydney Roosters
Brett Stewart - Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
Glenn Stewart - Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
James Tamou - North Queensland Cowboys
Akuila Uate - Newcastle Knights
Tony Williams - Manly Warringah Sea Eagles

Williams facing long suspension

Manly have suffered a heavy blow with forward Tony Williams facing up a long stint on the sidelines after he was charged with a grade 4 dangerous throw by the NRL match review committee.

Williams was put on report in the 9th minute of Manly's 17-14 loss to Cronulla at Toyota Stadium for his tackle on Sharks hooker Isaac De Gois.

The coaching staff are reviewing the incident and seeking legal advice.

If the Sea Eagles enter an early guilty plea, Williams will miss seven weeks, meaning he won't be available for the Sea Eagles until their Round 11 clash with the Roosters at Brookvale Oval.

If Williams and the Sea Eagles fight the charge or the grading at the NRL judiciary and lose, Williams could face 10 weeks on the sidelines.

If the Sea Eagles are successful in downgrading the charge to a grade 3 dangerous throw, Williams would still miss five matches, meaning he would be available for Manly's Round 9 clash against the Raiders.

It is a major blow to the Northern Beaches club, who will take on St George Illawarra on Saturday night. It is still unknown when Manly's star pair, Glenn Stewart (finger) and centre Steve Matai (hand), will be right to return.

The news isn't good for representative selectors either. Williams looks likely to miss out on Australia's Test match against New Zealand on April 20 at Eden Park and NSW Blues selectors are left with a difficult decision.

NSW would be able to select the 23-year-old in the opening State of Origin game at Etihad Stadium on May 23, if he takes the early plea, however he won't have played a game leading into the clash.

An unsuccessful challenge would rule him out of the opening State of Origin contest.

The grade 4 dangerous throw charge carries a base penalty of 725 points, but Williams has two prior non-similar offences which have added a 40% loading on the dangerous throw charge.

Williams was charged in the 2011 Preliminary Final against the Broncos with a grade 2 careless high tackle on Broncos Jharal Yow Yeh and then received a one-match ban during the Four Nations tournament in England for a high tackle on England's Ben Westwood.

Geoff Toovey has made the following statement in relation to the charge against Williams by the NRL match review committee.

"We're considering all our options and seeking legal advice. We'll make a decision tomorrow."

The Sea Eagles have until 12pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge.
