Source: www.nswrl.com.auSouth Sydney veteran David Kidwell got 'hands on' at the NSW Rugby League Academy today to impart his knowledge on 110 aspiring junior players taking part in the annual Easter Blues Camp - 17 years after his own experience at the Academy as a 15-year-old.
The 4-day camp at the Academy's base in Narrabeen has drawn players from across the state but it was an extra special day for the camp's sole New Zealand participant Stonie Bartle-McDonnell.
The 15-year-old spent almost six months saving pocket money earned from cutting hedges in his grandfather's garden to buy his airfares to Sydney and take part in his third consecutive Blues camp.
But the hard work was worth it for the youngster from the small town of Pyes Pa - just outside of Rotorua - after he received coaching and encouragement today from New Zealand Test great Kidwell.
"It was awesome, he showed us some really good techniques to roll out of tackles and be effective in and around the ruck," Bartle-McDonnell said of Kidwell.
Kidwell, in reflecting on a NSWRL Academy camp he took part in as a visiting New Zealand school boy in 1992, said the skills being taught at the Blues camp were an ideal foundation for junior players.
"Back when I got here in 1992 we hopped off the bus all wide-eyed and a bit daunted, because there were all these cones set up and we'd never really done those type of drills before," Kidwell said.
"But from getting involved today I was actually a bit surprised at the level of skill and the knowledge the kids already had, they were pretty good.
"The type of stuff we were doing is not far behind what we are learning up at NRL level ... in fact some of the drills we were going through were really quite similar.
"The setup out here is unbelievable - the kids are really fortunate to have access to great facilities and great coaches.
"The best thing is they all looked like they were having a great time and ultimately that is what the game is about - meeting new mates and having fun."
Kidwell joined South Sydney's Toyota Cup coach Daniel Irvine in visiting the Blues camp today while former South Sydney and Balmain legends Mario Fenech and Paul Sironen dropped by yesterday to talk to the children about the challenges they will face on and off the field as they grow older.
Earlier in the day the players took part in a pool recovery session to learn recuperation techniques employed by NRL clubs.
Former Les Catalans Dragons and Wests Tigers player John Wilson, now a development officer for the NSWRL, said recovery was a key part of the annual Blues camp agenda.
"The pool sessions are a terrific way for the kids to recover from training sessions and matches because it doesn't put any stress on their bodies, but still gives them resistance for when they're stretching," Wilson said.
"As a player I used to find the pool sessions really important, because stretching can sometimes leave you tight.
"We've had two days of camp and plenty of the kids were a bit sore in different parts of their bodies depending on what make or build their body is, so this is another way they are learning to take care of themselves."
The Easter Blues Camp concludes tomorrow when four participants will be selected as ball-boys for Game 2 of the Harvey Norman State of Origin series at ANZ Stadium.
All players also receive detailed progress reports on their skills development, a showbag with a Steeden football, and have enjoyed a variety of activities including canoeing, obstacle courses and trivia nights.
