Source: www.superleague.co.ukNick Youngquest scored a hat-trick of tries as Castleford returned to winning ways, but rock-bottom Widnes woes continued at the PROBIZ Coliseum with another Stobart Super League loss.
The Tigers had lost their last three matches, including a demoralising defeat to Featherstone in the Carnegie Challenge Cup, but they were the better side in a scrappy encounter.
The gap was just two points at the interval but second-half tries from Jordan Thompson, three from Youngquest and Daryl Clark's second of the afternoon condemned the Vikings to their sixth consecutive defeat.
Widnes head coach Denis Betts can take solace in the fact his side were competitive for large spells, but their much-maligned defence was exploited several times.
Brett Ferres thought he had opened the scoring for Castleford after bursting past Stefan Marsh to touch down, but referee Steve Ganson ruled the centre had been held up.
Widnes loose forward Simon Finnigan suffered a leg injury in the build-up and his afternoon was curtailed when he was stretchered off the field.
The Vikings, who had conceded 262 points in their last five matches, were showing signs of indiscipline, with the penalty count racking up early on, and Ben Cross gave away another for obstructing Ferres deep in his own territory.
Although Richie Owen was held up on the right, the ball was quickly spread back across the field for Ferres to cross in the left corner.
However, with their first real opportunity, the visitors levelled when Joe Mellor's short kick to the right was pouched by Paddy Flynn, who outjumped opposite number Youngquest to touch down, with Rhys Hanbury scoring the conversion.
Both sides had chances, but Castleford slowly started to take the initiative and only a tremendous last-gasp tackle prevented Josh Griffin from scoring after Danny Orr had made the breakaway.
The ball was quickly passed to Clark on the left and, although he crossed, the video referee ruled there had been a double movement.
Clark would not be denied a second time, however, and exploited a gap in the Widnes defence from dummy half for his side's second try.
Orr added the extras to give the Tigers a 10-6 lead, but Widnes scrum-half Hanbury kicked a penalty on the stroke of half-time to narrow the gap to just two points.
A rather scrappy start to the second half ensued, with both sides guilty of committing several handling errors in key areas.
However, Thompson extended Castleford's lead by spinning away from two Widnes defenders before scampering over from 30 metres.
Widnes' situation was worsened when Hanbury's grubber fell to Ferres and he passed to Youngquest, who sprinted the length of the field to touch down, with Craig Huby adding the extras after Orr had left the field due to a back injury.
Youngquest added his second from Ferres' high cut-out pass and registered his hat-trick on the left to give Castleford a 30-8 lead as the Vikings threatened to completely capitulate.
Clark then added his second, bursting over unchallenged, and Griffin added the conversion before Marsh ended Widnes' woeful second half with a flourish by crossing on the right.

Source: www.superleague.co.ukCastleford Tigers snatched a dramatic win over Hull KR with a last-minute try from winger Nick Youngquest.
The Tigers looked to be heading for their eighth successive defeat when they trailed 30-22, but they staged a great recovery to achieve their first home win of the season.
Hull KR's defeat was particularly hard on centre Kris Welham, who scored three tries in a pulsating match at the Probiz Coliseum.
The Tigers recalled Daryl Clark and on-loan Lee Mitchell with the former replacing hooker Ryan Hudson (calf injury) and the latter taking over at centre from Australian James Grehan. Castleford were again without centre Joe Arundel (shoulder injury).
Liam Salter replaced Sam Latus on the wing in the only change to the Hull KR side that beat Huddersfield Giants. Scott Murrell continued at stand-off in the absence of Craig Hall and Blake Green.
Mitchell lost the ball in Castleford's first set and Rovers quickly capitalised when Michael Dobson put in Welham near the corner for a second-minute try.
The visitors nearly scored again two minutes later when Salter narrowly failed to touch down Murrell's clever kick.
Castleford hit back to snatch a seventh-minute lead when Rangi Chase bamboozled Hull KR's defence with a diagonal run to set up winger Josh Griffin's ninth try of the season that Kirk Dixon converted from the touchline.
The Tigers then had a let off when Dobson created an opening for Graeme Horne who dropped the ball over the tryline after Chase's ambitious pass had gifted Hull KR possession.
With Dobson dictating play, Hull KR continued to look the sharper side and it was no surprise when they regained the lead.
The Tigers were again punished for losing the ball in the 19th minute when Dobson and Shannon McDonnell sent in Welham for his second try that Dobson goaled.
David Hodgson then went close to scoring from Dobson's high kick as Castleford were pinned in their own 20.
Castleford did well to survive further Hull KR pressure before they went back in front in the 33rd minute when Chase's inch-perfect kick to the corner created a try for Youngquest and Dixon added his second touchline goal.
Rovers were rocked again five minutes later when Chase and Brett Ferres combined to send in full-back Richard Owen for a try that Dixon goaled to put the Tigers 18-10 up.
Hull KR cut the gap to two points on the stroke of half-time when McDonnell put in Josh Hodgson and Dobson converted.
The game swung back Rovers way in the second half when Owen failed to deal with Murrell's high kick and the ball was scooped up by McDonnell, whose pass saw Welham complete his hat-trick.
They soon shot further ahead when Lincoln Withers darted over and Dobson kicked his fourth goal to make it 28-18, but Castleford hit back when Chase's long pass sent Dixon tearing over.
Dobson's 59th-minute penalty goal gave Hull KR an eight-point cushion but the Tigers struck back again two minutes later when Danny Orr crossed and Dixon added the conversion.
McDonnell looked to have rescued Rovers with a magnificent tackle on Owen, who eventually put in Youngquest for his last-gap winner that Dixon goaled.
