The Harlequins RL squad, with training in full swing and going extremely well, have experienced an eventful week in the lead up to their Christmas break with 3 dramatic occurrences.
Last season's Captain and Player of the Year, Mark McLinden, underwent surgery to rectify his long-standing and troublesome back injury. This routine but delicate operation on his spine is reported to have been completely successful but his recovery period will see Mark missing the opening few weeks of the season.
Solomon Haumono, recently Captain of the Tongan team in the Federation Cup, shocked the Quins players and the Club by announcing his retirement from Rugby League with immediate effect to resume his professional boxing career in Australia. Solomon returned to Rugby League in Manly 4 years ago leaving behind an 8-0 record as a heavyweight and some experts are predicting he can go all the way on his return to the ring.
Finally, in a run of three setbacks, new signing Sione Faumuina has had to return to New Zealand for family reasons. He had been training well but will now not be returning to London.
Harlequins Director, Tony Rea, commented: "After a great month of pre-season training under Brian McDermott, the squad has been faced with some adversity this week. We have accepted the two players' decisions although, obviously, not pleased by them. On the positive side, Mark is recovering well from his back operation and a fully-fit Mark McLinden is terrific news for Quins fans for the season ahead."
