The Rugby League International Federation today released the game's official World Rankings following a highly successful 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

The rankings are based on a two year cycle of results and take into consideration a number of factors including regular competition within international tournaments.

Australia maintains its top spot courtesy of having defeated recently-crowned World Champions New Zealand three times in their past four encounters.

The RLWC 08 winners are in second spot with England at third despite their poor showing in the tournament, after whitewashing the Kiwis in the 2007 Gillette Test Series.

Fiji has edged out France and Papua New Guinea to take fourth spot on the strength of reaching the semi final of the World Cup while Ireland and Scotland have both secured a top ten spot.

Rugby League International Federation Chairman Colin Love AM said the rankings would add further spice to this year's Four Nations between Australia, New Zealand, England and France, which is set for the Northern Hemisphere this autumn.

"There are going to be some terrific match-ups in the Four Nations and the battle for the world's number one ranking is sure to be a highlight," Love said today.

"There's no doubt that New Zealand will want to secure the top world ranking to go along with their deserved status of 2008 World Cup Champions.

"The Kangaroos meanwhile would still be hurting from their World Cup final loss and will be hoping to reassert their dominance under new coach Tim Sheens.

"It all points towards an exciting time ahead for international Rugby League."

Wales go into this autumn's Rugby League European Cup in twelfth position, one place behind Lebanon which will also be involved in that tournament.

Rugby League European Federation Chairman and International Federation Deputy Chairman Richard Lewis said: "Last year's World Cup was a huge success for the growth of international Rugby League and it is fantastic to see such a diverse number of nations now making up the rankings.

"Great progress is being made at all levels internationally and that good work is set to continue in 2009 with a number of exciting international tournaments planned."

Hefknight brings a good point, if Georgia had 12000 people attend a match against Russia than the RLIF should invest in them. This means the NRL should give training resources, and training camps to these countries. I would like to see the NRL teams take their pre-season trips to places like Russia or Georgia, it would be a good opportunity for the players to travel and get some good publicity overseas, whilst promoting the game. Even some of the teams struggling with finance can possibly go to the Pacific nations and help out there.

Papua New Guinea Kumuls, who were ranked 5th after the last world cup has won the Pacific Cup on 1st Novemebr 2009 and gained the right to play for the four nations cup next year (2010)with Australia, New Zealand and England. Its ranking should now improve up by two levels. The Pacific cup was played in Port Moresby between Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands and PNG. PNG thrashed Tonga 44-14 and Cook Islands 42-14 in convincing win to take out the Pacific Cup and is sending a strong message to the rugby leauge world, that the Kumul are a force to be reckoned with. All the Best for the Kumuls in 2010 4 nations cup.

I think every team in the wc last year was at at least nrl standard. But i still reckon one of the origin teams still could have won the thing.

Itll be interesting to see america in five years if there comp survives in a professional capacity.

To szponzor: Observer status means the game may start in the future and there are people in Hungary working toward that outcome.
The rankings look fair to me.

Andy, do you really think full strength Tongan Samoan and Fijian sides would struggle in the Bundy comp, the likes of Mateo and Hayne, Wes naiqama, moi moi and Tuiaki and giants like Puletua, Luaiki and Williams, i think it would be just as well they didn't play Bundy comp because it would be carnage, what a lot of these teams and their now full time professional players need is more regular test matches against the big three, so they can work up to that standard, otherwise the next world cup along with these rankings will mean nothing.

I'm a hungarian rugby league fan. Hungary is in this list, but in this country not exist any rugby league team, in this coutry never played a rugby league match. How can be Hungary in the World Rankings? 'Official observer status' without play?

I realise that but we won when it counted and if the tables were turned and we had won all our games against aussie except for the WC im sure they would still be claiming, and counted as the worlds best.

At the end of the day NZ,England and co get a raw deal in my opinion.

   submitted on Monday 30 Mar 2009 21:36:33

Well dont forget GTR that its not the 1st time the Kiwis have beaten the Kangaroos over the last few years and we are getting stronger every year with all of our juniors running around in the NRL, the tide is turning.... that has been proven! And this is good for Rugby League!
Anton
   submitted on Monday 30 Mar 2009 16:41:55

World rankings? There are only 3 real international teams playing the game (with any real substance). Aust, NZ and England.

The rest would struggle in our Bundy cup comp.

What ever happened to Canada as an emerging nation? They got left off completely?

Also concur with other posts in regards to Hawaii???

nzwarrior - cheer up champ, yes you won the world cup but that doesnt make nz the best team in the world. you cant just win 1 game in 2 years and then suddenly claim to be the best team in the world, you won the one that counted and nz are world cup champions but it takes some consisitency to be the worlds best and nz havent proved that..

Does anyone know where Georgia is? They're no world beaters but they did push Russia as time and had 12,000 attend an international a few years ago. Did I hear they're board collapsed??

Thought I would go to the RLIF website to read up more about the rankings. The site automatically directs you to the RLWC08. Surely it is time for RL to have a proper dedicated site for international RL if it wants to be taken seriously
