NO matter who NSW pick for Origin III, I think we need more than 17 names at the team announcement. We need a policy statement.

Is this team being chosen for the long-term future? Is it being chosen to get a result in this one game? We'd even like to hear why individual players were dropped and promoted.

The selectors have defended their own positions by saying this is a great Queensland side and they have done the best they can.

But if they want to keep their jobs, they should explain to us how they are approaching this final game - not just throw a team at us and expect us to cop it.

Steve Mortimer made a lot of sense last week when he likened Queensland to a small local business and NSW to a big corporation. NSW needs to scale down - just like every big corporation in these tough times.

The idea of picking a 25-man squad for the series and not going outside it under almost any circumstances is a good one.

----------

AT the risk of being accused of blatant cross-promotion, I want to discuss the Rugby League Week Players Poll.

The players arcing up about the "most over-rated" question was pretty predictable but I find it pretty mystifying when they are far more amenable to answering questions about who is the dirtiest player, the biggest sledger and who is the biggest sook.

Like, WTF?

I would far rather be called over-rated (please feel free to do so below) than dishonest or even a sook (again, feel free).

And as far as the 20-plus players I interviewed are concerned, only one said 'I won't answer that question" when asked the most over-rated player in the game. The others said they couldn't think of anyone, or 'there isn't anyone this year' or 'can we come back to that question?'.

It didn't seem to me like the move of group solidarity it has been portrayed as.

----------

The unveiling of that Mal Meninga statue at Canberra Stadium on Sunday got me thinking - is this the next salary cap rort?

How long before a club says "we can't afford to pay you much next year - our cap is pretty tight. But when you retire, we'll give you a job AND we'll build a statue in your honour.''

Some clubs would end up with more statues inside their stadium than spectators.

----------

FOR a newcomer, Brett Suttor did "well" in the players poll worst referee category.

And I am not sure it has much to do with his actual ability with the whistle. The bloke loves to have joke for 80 minutes while 34 players are busting their arses and in a very serious frame of mind.

Now, it should be OK for a younger player, referee, touch judge, reporter or broadcaster to act exactly the same as someone who's been doing it for years. But even though the old 'paying your dues' principle is on the way out, it is still there.

You can call it pecking order.

And Brett Suttor is a long way down it - far enough down for him not to take the piss out of Gavin Badger like he did on Sunday.

Badger cautioned Cameron Smith by saying "Let's work together and not against each other''. Suttor laughed and commented "Can I have that one, Badge? Let's work together and not against each other! Ha!''

Maybe the constant chatter is Suttor's way of handling pressure. But when blokes are playing with broken bones and sheered ligaments and bad backs and dislocated fingers and shoulders, having a greenhorn referee crack a joke every two minutes is not going to endear him to them.

----------

THE news today that Epalahame Lauaki has been granted a visa to join Hull FC will prompt a giant sigh of relief from professional rugby league players.

Greg Eastwood gets the result in the middle of next month of his appeal against a visa application denial - and may face a difficult decision on whether to join Leeds or stay with the Bulldogs.

And congratulations to Ian Millward on signing as Leigh's head coach. He's too good to stay an assistant forever.

Dragonheart - I agree with your call on Barba, and I'm a Bulldogs fan!

Even though I love Marshall and his flair, for me the most overrated player in the NRL is Benji Marshall.

He does fark all for 5 games makes numerous errors, bad defence, and all you hear is excuses about he is adjusting to being a halfback, he has to let the game come to him, he has to do this, do that, but then he has a blinder in one game and everyone talks about how great he is etc etc. when in reality Marshall is an enigma at this stage of his career. He tries hard, but he is either brilliant or really bad. For me he is the most overrated player in the game by the media anyway.

There are others but they dont get the adulation and protection that Marshall gets from all the commentators. One thing i really dislike about the media of rugby league in general IMO, is that too many players get a free ride, and not many call a spade a spade. I dont want the 'hysteria' type of analysis where you are either a hero or zero, but a bit of cold hard analysis needs to be out there.

PS I actually like the Overrated question. On the same token I would love RLW in conjunction with the players association or something come up with a players player award or a players team of the year award.

Oh, and another thing Mr Mascord, you're not an overrated, dishonest sook. That title belongs to Rebecca Wilson!

I have heard that clown Suttor on a few occasions on SportsEars, he's incredibly annoying! Mind you, I have a problem with referees most of them time :)

doubter, Ben "the next Thurston" Barba is a myth. He can't tackle, he can't run a side and his jink and step doesn't cut it amongst the men. People criticise Soward's defence but he looks like Tonie Carroll compared to Barba! I don't think Anasta is hyped much at all nowadays. Trent Barrett, however, is overrated and overhyped big time just as he was at the Dragons all those years.

rleague did a fans poll last year if I remember, you guys bring that back this year?

Dragonheart, we'll probably do it again this year. It got a pretty decent response last year.

I think that is a great idea - RLW should do an officials poll - all the NRL referees, Touch Judges and Video Refs - should get to anwser the player related quiestions - it would be fantastic and these days there are almost 40 of them in a squad so enough

Good idea, forum Poll. I vote Kurt Gidley

I like that suggestion dan.

How about we put it out there for the punters on rleague.com? Any suggestions for most hyped?

I'd vote Willie Mason but he isn't too hyped these days.

Maybe Benji? Too hot and cold. I know he's been out of position but I keep hearing his name spoken with reverence and it doesn't fit with their position on the ladder.

Others worth mentioning:
Benny Barba (pre-season hype, that is)
Anasta
Trent Barrett

Actually, even as a fan I'm not sure who I'd pick as most over-rated. I haven't seen enough games for all clubs to say fairly who, but there are certainly a few media favourites at present that I'm yet to see deliver with my own eyes. Some that come to mind are Kurt Gidley, Mitchell Pearce and David Williams.

Suttor like Hayne are both overated showponys and i used to think Mick Stone and the Grasshopper Barry Gomersall were bad now i am starting to have second thoughts.

I find it funny that some players won't vote on the most overrated player but voting on the worst referee is fine. Maybe Referees should be allowed to vote on the most overrated player?
