The Balmain Tigers is one of the founding clubs of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL). They are and have been one of the most successful clubs in the history of the competition. With mulitiple premierships and grand final victories, the emblem of the Tiger (Balmain's logo) is one that is instantly recognised by all Australian Rugby League followers. In 2000, as a result of pressure from the NRL, Balmain merged with the Western Suburbs Magpies to make the Wests Tigers.Balmain's last premiership victory came in 1969 when they defeated the heavily favoured South Sydney Rabbitohs 11-2.The last grand final Balmain appeared in was the 1989 loss to the Canberra Raiders in which they had a lead of 12-2 at halftime. By the end of the second half Canberra managed to level the score and won the game in extra time. This was a shattering loss for the Tigers after having lost the previous grand final to the Canterbury Bulldogs. Source: This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.
