Impressive Knights start season brilliantly Sun March 12, 2006 Newcastle have bounced back from the disappointment of gaining the wooden spoon last year with an impressive 25-6 victory against last year's minor premiers Parramatta at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Milton Thaiday got the ball rolling for the Knights in the 2nd minute when he scored outwide. Parramatta struck back in the 23rd minute when Michael Vella crashed over under the posts. Luke Burt converted to put the Eels up 6-4.
Irish winger Brian Carney scored in his first NRL match five minutes before halftime to regain the Knights the lead. Carney enjoyed a fine debut at NRL level after previously playing in the Super League and has played 12 Tests for Great Britain. Carney has only signed with Newcastle for the one season before he links with the Gold Coast Titans in 2007.
The second half was all one way traffic as Newcastle simply proved too good for Parramatta with Riley Brown, Matthew Gidley and Adam Woolnough all scoring second half tries. Andrew Johns tookover the kicking duties in the second after landing two from three after Kurt Gidley missed two shots in the first half. Johns also added a drop-goal to round off the Knights 25 points.
Newcastle won the forwards battle and all the players played their part. Johns led the side well and copped a few knocks but the most pleasing aspect was that all of the Knights dominance didn't revolve around just the one player.
Parramatta were very flat and disappointing after coming into the season as one of the teams to beat this year. The Eels never got going and looked very disjointed in attack.
After the match, Newcastle coach Michael Hagan said, "It's an outstanding start for us. It was not only the winning of the game but the way we won.
"We toughed it out and weren't too flamboyant. We ground out a win."
Parramatta coach Brian Smith said, "A few boys were off their game. A few boys were underdone.
