Fri March 24, 2006 Milton Thaiday has confirmed his status as one of the most exciting fullback prospects in the game with a hat-trick of tries to keep Newcastle's unbeaten record in tact as they defeated a disappointing Bulldogs outfit 46-22 at Energy Australia Stadium tonight. Thaiday came across from rugby union last year and was one of the Knights shining lights in their wooden spoon season. He has benefitted from a full off-season and is right up there amongst the best fullbacks in the game alongside Matt Bowen, Billy Slater, Brett Hodgson, Brett Stewart, Clinton Schifofske, Darren Lockyer (he should be back at fullback) and of course the premier custodian in the game today Anthony Minichiello. The Bulldogs came to Newcastle full of confidence after an impressive 47-12 victory against the Wests Tigers but they was only a small bit of sunshine in what has been a bleak period for the club that has been the most successful over the last 30 years. The Knights cashed in on the Bulldogs poor defence and led 34-6 at halftime with that soon going to 46-6. The fact the Bulldogs scored three late tries only adds small consolation to the problems they've had except for last week. Andrew Johns landed nine goals from ten attempts, which saw him pass 2,000 career points and now has a career total of 2,016 and on current form is within striking distance of Jason Taylor and Daryl Halligan. Johns cashed in on the Knights receiving plenty of penalties when the game was in the balance landing three penalty goals in the opening 20 minutes including his first in the 5th minute giving him the magical 2,000 mark. Next week the Bulldogs have the bye and coach Steve Folkes has plenty of work to discover whether this was a one-off performance or possibly last week was just a one-off in a series of disappointing efforts around that. The fact the Bulldogs didn't throw in the towel during the second half is the only positive as last year they surrended in several matches, which was never Canterbury like. However, it was Thaiday's night despite Johns passing the 2,000 barrier and his status as a new star in the game is now confirmed. The only thing more disappointing than the Bulldogs performance was that of the referee's and the officials. |
