Roosters edge out winless Rabbitohs
Sun May 21, 2006
South Sydney have come within two points of victory today but still not enough to earn that elusive first win of the season. It was always going to be a tough ask for the battling Rabbitohs coming up against a star-studded Roosters outfit and they nearly hauled in a 16-point margin at the end.

Roosters coach Ricky Stuart named a side that had completely no resemblence to the Big League programme and it's something the NRL should seriously look at as it's confusing for those who buy match guides. The confusion of all the changes, which is something Stuart specialises in as part of the mind games nearly confused his own side as Nathan Merritt got Souths off to a great start with a try in the 5th minute. Joe Williams couldn't convert as Souths led 4-0.

Souths glory was only short lived as tries to Amos Roberts in the 13th minute and Iosia Soliola five minutes later opened the Roosters to a 12-4 lead with Craig Fitzgibbon converting both the tries.

Adam MacDougall got the underdogs right back into the match on the stroke of halftime when he crossed over for a very valuable try. Williams added the extras for Souths to be within two points at the break.

The Roosters machine clicked into gear with tries to John Doyle, Vince Mellars and David Shillington in the space of 13 minutes to open up an 18 point lead.

Souths however rallied with Ben Rogers and Williams scored to bridge the gap to eight points. Williams had the chance to bring it within a converted try but the kick outwide was wide of the posts.

The Roosters defence held firm until David Fa'alogo scored in the final minute.

A win is a win and the Roosters will be happy with that after an indifferent season for the squad they have on paper, which is easily a top two outfit.

It's a different story for the Rabbitohs who just can't buy a trick or any luck. A win around the corner is a very long time away and as each loss happens, the odds of Jason Taylor being coach next year is being shortened.
