The Canberra Raiders have posted their first back-to-back wins of the season, downing the South Sydney Rabbitohs 24-22 at Canberra Stadium tonight.
On a typically chilly Canberra winter's night, the Raiders held off a spirited Rabbitohs fightback in an exciting second half of football. For the Raiders the win was a fitting 25th birthday present, with many of the club's former greats on hand to celebrate the occasion.
The Raiders were down 6-0 early, but fought back and looked comfortable in heading to the halftime break with an 18-6 lead.
But the Bunnies, searching for their first win of the season, came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and two quick tries saw the margin reduced to just two points.
A late try to Marshall Chalk gave the Raiders an 8-point buffer, before the Rabbitohs scored a converted try in the final minute to fall just short.
The loss brings up Souths 12th from as many starts this season but with the new-found influence of David Peachey, their breakthrough win doesn't look too far away.
In injury news arising from tonight's game, Thom Learoyd-Lahrs (shin) and Ben Jones (head cut) were taken from the field in the second half but are both expected to be available for next week's clash with the Bulldogs.
