Sun July 9, 2006 Wests Tigers have enjoyed one of their most impressive victories of the season defeating Cronulla 22-10 at Toyota Park to keep their semi-final hopes alive despite superstar five-eighth Benji Marshall being out for the season. Marshall has been the difference between Wests winning and losing for the last two years where his class has been evident when he's been off the field injured where last week they were down 32-0 against the Bulldogs after 60 minutes. Cronulla had a disappointing loss against Brisbane last week and were keen for a big performance on home soil to get back into the top four. Ben Galea got Wests Tigers off to the ideal start when he crossed over in the 4th minute and Brett Hodgson's successful conversion put the Tigers up 6-0. The Sharks worked their way back into the match and leveled up the scores in the 28th minute with Kevin Kingston scoring. Luke Covell converted the try and then landed a penalty goal four minutes later as Cronulla led 8-6. Shane Elford regained Wests lead in the 55th minute when he lept above the Sharks defence to claim a well-timed cross field kick from hooker Robbie Farah. The Tigers backed it up with another try immediately from the kick off when Daniel Fitzhenry sliced through the Sharks defence and dummied past debutant fullback Toshio Laiseni in a great 80m effort. Hodgson only converted the Fitzhenry try as Wests led 16-8. Covell landed a penalty goal to get Cronulla within six points but a try from Dean Collis with ten minutes remaining put the visitors into a dominant position when he hit a superb hole. Hodgson added the extras to complete a fine match where he bounced back in style following the disappointment of the State of Origin decider last Wednesday night. Wests are now two points outside the top eight due to an unexpected win and they need to produce more wins consistently to prove they aren't a one-man team. The Sharks have the Roosters next week and they won't want to be the side that gets the Bondi boys back into form. |
