Roosters find feet again as Panthers stumble again Sun August 13, 2006 Penrith's bid at a semi-final spot was dealt another savage blow, losing 40-20 to the Sydney Roosters tonight.
The match was a celebration for the Roosters as Craig Fitzgibbon surpassed David Furner's record of 1218 points as the highest scoring forward in premiership history and has now scored 1222 points from 33 tries and 545 goals .
Both teams traded early tries before the Roosters hit the lead 10-6 following a try to Amos Roberts in the 19th minute against his old club.
Penrith responded with a try to winger Michael Gordon and a penalty goal to take a 14-10 lead towards the shadows of halftime.
The Roosters fullback Shaun Foley put the tri-colours ahead with a try 3 minutes out from the break.
Down 16-14 at halftime the Panthers responded after Luke Priddis took it upon himself to lead the comeback with a try out of dummy half. The Panthers started to dominate possession and make inroads in the Roosters defence.
But three Roosters tries in seven minutes ended the Panthers night. Sam Perrett scored a hattrick and Josh Lewis grabbed one to send the Roosters out to 34-20 lead after 67 minutes.
A final try to Soward in the last minute completed the defeat of the Panthers.
The Panthers meet the desperate Sharks, the Knights and the Bulldogs in a tough run home and look certain to miss the play-offs unless they win all three games.
The Roosters season has already ended but following big defeats of the Cowboys and Panthers in recent weeks they find themselves only two points behind both of those teams.
