Source: www.weststigers.com.auThe Western Suburbs Magpies Harold Matthews team took the field against the Bears looking for a relatively easy game; however the Bears had different ideas. They scored two tries in the first ten minutes and a shell shocked Magpies team found themselves down 10-0. The Magpies hit back with a try to five eight and captain, Thomas Kennedy and with the conversion by Roland Gloss, the Bears lead was reduced to four points. Unfortunately, the Magpies failed to maintain possession, which allowed the Bears to skip away to a 20-6 lead, before centre Sama Sauvao weaved his way through the defence to score a great try.
During the break the coach stressed the need to maintain possession and cut out the simple errors. During the next 20 minutes or so, the game moved from one end of the field to the other before centre David Tautaiolefue crashed over the line and with the conversion by Zac Besant, the Bears lead was reduced to 20-16. With five minutes left on the clock, the game looked well and truly over when the Bears scored a converted try, putting them ahead 26-16.
The Magpies lined up on half way ready for the kick off. The ball was put up high and was sensationally caught on the full by Thomas Kennedy who broke through three tackles to score under the posts. The extras were added by Zac Besant and the Magpies had a chance to get out of gaol with the Bears lead reduced to 26-22.
In the final couple of minutes, the ball moved across the backline to Sama Sauvao who put on a weaving run before scoring near the posts. Zac Besant answered the call by adding the extra two points and for the first time in the game, the Magpies hit the lead 28-26. The Bears threw everything at the Magpies, but their defence held strong, ensuring a great come from behind win.
Scorers for the Magpies ? Thomas Kennedy 2 tries, Sama Sauvao 2 tries, David Tautaiolefue 1 try, Zac Besant 3 goals and Roland Gloss 1 goal.
Best for the Magpies - Thomas Kennedy, Sama Sauvao, David Tautaiolefue and Ben Mahina.
The Magpies play the Sharks at 11am Saturday 8 April, 2006 Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
