CENTRAL were always going to start behind the eight-ball in their clash against Easts at Langlands Park. Losing halfback Denny Lambert on the eve of the match just made things tougher.
Eager to distance themselves from last years wooden spoon effort, the Comets had a difficult first outing for 2006, beaten 32-10 by the Tigers.
Former St Brendans Yeppoon star Darren Rodgers was forced to start at half in place of Lambert, who was only confirmed as a withdrawal late on Friday.
The March heat took its toll on both sides, with handling atrocious at times, particularly on the part of the visitors.
Having secured both lower grades against newcomers Western Districts, Easts moved ahead 20-0 at halftime in the main game.
Playmaker Luke Branighan was at the heart of most attacking raids, while Brett McPherson and Matt Lockyer injected themselves well. As with last year, Mark Cantoni led the Tigers best up front.
The second half was a more even affair and Herewini Rangi once more stood tall as the shining light for the Comets.
Powerfully built and as capable at playing backrow as hooker, Rangi must surely be a chance of following in the footsteps of countryman and former Comet David Faiumu.
For Easts, veteran Scott Sipple was billed as playing his 150th Queensland Wizard Cup game against the Comets.
However closer inspection of the records showed it was only his 146th. It probably wasnt a game hed celebrate in any case, having been left sore and sorry after a high shot which saw Marty Oborn go on report.
