SOUTHS Logan came within a whisker of snaring a spectacular house-warming present, pushing Norths in a 36-28 loss for the clubs opening game at new home Brandon Park.
The shift from West End to Acacia Ridge is seen as vital in the rejuvenation of the historic Magpies, and it almost paid instant dividends.
Formed up against a side full of future NRL players, battlers Souths Logan got out to an 18-12 lead at halftime.
The Maggies always seem to save something special for the Devils, exhibited by a shock 22-20 win in Round 11 of last season.
There was even more motivation this time around, with the likes of Brandon Costin, Quentin Laulu Togagae and Derek Fletcher swapping across to the other side of Brisbane River for 2006.
Costin was certainly impressive in attack and found his way onto the points sheet with a try and five goals, while Laulu Togagae also grabbed a try.
For fans it was the first opportunity to see Laulu Togagae go up against former teammate and fellow fullback Smith Samau, an intriguing battle if ever there was one.
The game hung in the balance for all but the final minute, with a try to the Devils on fulltime blowing out the final score.
Captain Anthony Boyd was once more a standout for Norths, while Josh Tatupu grabbed a double. James Aubussson crossed in his first game for the Devils.
Souths Logan was also impressive in the FOGS Cup, this time grabbing the spoils with a 38-18 win, but falling short with a 36-14 defeat in the Colts Challenge.
