THEY may still fly under the radar as far as some football followers are concerned, but to those whove watched the Queensland Wizard Cup closely, theres plenty of reason to take notice of the Tweed Seagulls this year.
In what was perhaps the biggest shock of Round One, Tweed whitewashed Wynnum Manly 26-0 at Kougari Oval on Saturday.
After Wynnum progressed through the pre-season unbeaten boasting an impressive new squad they were expected to have the upper hand on their own home turf.
That was never the case however, with Tweed leading 12-0 at halftime, maintaining a good line in defence and making a better fist of things with the ball in hand.
Despite the Coast side being competitive in each season since entering in 2003 there was still one pundit on Sunday that contended Wynnum had been beaten by a bunch of nobodies.
Its a perception Steve Murphy and his men have grown used to in recent seasons, but one that ignores the club has kept together a strong core of players, while making key additions in the offseason.
Because a large selection of the Tweed squad comes through the New South Wales junior and country systems, many are indeed no names to their Queensland counterparts.
That is likely to change however with the clubs move to join the FOGS Cup and FOGS Colts Challenge, exposing up-and-comers to both a higher standard of football and opposition scouts.
Already Colts half Trent Islen has raised a few eyebrows with his intuitive play.
Another player from Tweed who has certainly made a name captain Andrew Moroney is set to miss at least a month of football and possibly even the season.
Moroney left the field after 20 minutes against Wynnum Manly with a torn pectoral muscle. Tests in the coming week will ascertain the severity.
Moroney had started the match on fire, with the can carried by Roy Friend, Eddie Harrison and Tom Prichard.
