SOUTHS Logan coach Mark Gliddon has credited the clubs Canberra Connection with helping the Magpies over the line for their first win in seven Queensland Wizard Cup games.
Having recorded six losses in a row, beginning back in Round 18 last year, the Magpies scored a highly impressive 36-6 victory against Tweed Heads on Saturday.
The win was Souths Logans first for the year and the first at Brandon Park since shifting there permanently during the off-season.
Understandably cheery with the result, coach Gliddon revealed that a drilling from defensive specialist and former Canberra Raider Jason Burnham had primed his charges for the performance.
Burnham worked with the squad on retreating more efficiently, getting off the line and piling numbers in tackles, noting that the Maggies had conceded an average 40 points per game in the first two rounds.
The result was a dominant display from the southsiders, leaders at halftime to the tune of 26-0.
Another link to the Raiders, through club directors Mal Meninga and Gary Greinke, helped snag prize signing Brandon Costin prior to the start of 2006. That as much as anything, Gliddon contends, has the Magpies feeling more confident of their direction this year.
Brandon Costin, in my opinion, has been the most dominant player in the competition so far this season, said Gliddon.
Hes a very smart player who has a lot of impact. Brandons an assistant coach as well, so he has a lot of say in things at training. Id be mad not to use his experience.
While Costin has been consistently strong, Wynnum Manly recruit Scott Marks was the standout against Tweed Heads, receiving the Players Player award as a result.
Centre Damien Willis racked up three tries to also earn acclaim, while Phil Dennis and Cameron Joyce were other noted contributors.
Asked what his team can do to stay in the winners circle, Gliddon said one of the main priorities would be staying fit and healthy, with injuries a big threat to the clubs depth.
The Magpies are performing encouragingly in lower grades however and had wins in both FOGS Cup and the Colts Challenge. It was the first time in four years Souths Logan had won in all grades.
Conversely Tweed Heads seem to have hit the skids after a promising start to the year, marred by long-term injuries to spearheads Andrew Moroney and Chris Enahoro.
Souths Logan has the bye next weekend, while Tweed Heads hosts its first game of the year at the Piggabeen Complex against the all-conquering North Queensland Young Guns.
